PointsBet Canada confirmed they’d be ready to go live in Ontario on April 4, 2022. They received AGCO approval to launch on day one, along with other sportsbooks like theScore Bet Canada.
After receiving AGCO approval, CEO for PointsBet Canada Scott Vanderwel had this to say, “Today’s approval of PointsBet Canada as a licensed sportsbook in Ontario effective April 4, 2022, is a momentous step in unveiling our authentically Canadian gaming experience to the province.”

Ontario opened the sportsbook market to numerous private operators, with over 30 sports betting licenses already awarded. Other operators like DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook, and BetMGM are also in that mix.
The licensing fee in Ontario is a mere $100,000, and Ontario sportsbook operators will pay a 20 percent tax rate. This makes Ontario a very attractive market to sportsbooks like PointsBet Canada, and this province could become one of the hottest sports betting scenes in all of North America.
During a virtual webinar from Brock University, Chief Commercial Officer for PointsBet Canada Nic Sulsky commented on the Ontario iGaming market. Believing that 30 sportsbooks is an unsustainable number, he said, “Once you get in a sports bettor’s rotation, then the best product will win out.”
It will be interesting to watch how PointsBet approaches the Canadian market and if they end up signing partnerships with major local teams. PointsBet Canada has already been aggressive in striking sportsbook partnerships across the country.
PointsBet Ontario Features
PointsBet was one of the first major sportsbooks to really invest in Canadian advertising once it was announced that Ontario would welcome private sportsbooks on April 4, 2022.
Because of that, they’ve been one of the more eagerly anticipated entries into the Ontario sports betting market, but what do they have to offer sports bettors in the province?
PointsBet Ontario App
Available for Android and iOS, the PointsBet app has been often been credited as one of the most visually appealing sports betting apps on the market. The menus are easy to navigate, and it has everything sports bettors want in the palm of their hand.

The app has impressive 4.4/5 rating on the App Store, and 4.0/5 on the Google Play Store, so their user experience is reliable across the board no matter what type of mobile device you’re on. PointsBet Canada claims to be “the fastest and most secure Canadian sports betting app,” and it’s certainly up there in terms of overall performance.
PointsBet Canada is frequently providing performance updates to the app through regular software updates. While the app collects data like your location, contact and financial information, and personal identification, your privacy details are secure with the PointsBet Ontario app.
PointsBetting
PointsBetting is a unique way to wager where your winnings can change drastically right up until the end of the game. Your initial wager will be multiplied by a figure that’s dependent on just how right or wrong you are with your bet.
For instance, let’s say you wager $100 on the over (200+ points) in an NBA game between the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies. If the line is set at 200 points, and the game finishes with a total of 205 points, your initial wager of $100 will be multiplied by 5 because the total went over by 5 points. In this instance, you’d win $500 and walk away with a $600 payout.
However, say the game between the Raptors and the Grizzlies finishes with a total of 195 points scored. In this case, your initial wager would be multiplied by -5, resulting in a $500 loss. PointsBet offers a stop loss feature to prevent instances like this, but this should illustrate how this high-risk, high-reward system can play out.
How to Sign Up with PointsBet Ontario
Signing up with PointsBet Ontario is a simple process. They’ll ask you for details like a username and password, full name, residential address, email, phone number, and photo ID to verify your identity.
Rest assured, your personal information is 100% secure with PointsBet Ontario. The sign-up process is quick and easy, so you’ll have your own sportsbook account created in no time.

PointsBet Canada is also setting their sites on other provinces like Alberta and there is an expectation that they will be one of the first sportsbooks looking to join the legal Alberta betting apps market once live. Legal single-event sports wagering is expanding across Canada quickly, and PointsBet Canada could become available in other places like British Columbia as more provinces launch private sportsbook markets.
Until then, Canada’s most populous province will be the first to receive the PointsBet sportsbook. Check out the section below for full details on PointsBet Ontario.
PointsBet Canada Sportsbook Partnerships
PointsBet Canada has already signed some major sportsbook partnerships in the country, including deals with the following groups:
- Alpine Canada
- Curling Canada
- NHL Alumni Association
- The Trailer Park Boys
It’s clear that PointsBet Canada is incorporating unique marketing as they look to stand out from other online sportsbooks. The Alpine Canada deal was announced at the start of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and the Trailer Park Boys are household characters in the Great White North.
The Australian sportsbook PointsBet is already proving they want to make their mark in Canada.
The Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs are owned by MLSE, who haven’t yet partnered with any sportsbooks. PointsBet Canada CCO Nic Sulsky commented on this lack of partnership during the virtual webinar with Brock University, noting “MLSE is not taken yet.”

Betting on local teams is one of the best ways to get an inside edge over the sportsbooks, as you might know something the bookmakers have missed. The Canadian sports betting scene is loaded with teams to wager on, especially when you factor in all the Ontario sports teams.
PointsBet Canada debuted in a province that features teams like the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Having already signed numerous sportsbook partnerships, PointsBet Canada could be looking to sign agreements with some of these teams to appeal to local sports fans.
