One team that will not have a chance to add hardware are the United States. Despite them having +625 odds to triumph at the start of the event, they lost three of five matches to slump to fifth in pool B. Late Monday evening in North America, the quarters will kick off with the favored ROC squaring off against Canada, with the remaining three games following suit.

ROC on a Roll

The ROC had a fantastic pool stage, winning four of their five matches. Twice they won in straight sets, twice they won in just four sets and their lone loss was to France, which was a surprise. Canada lost their first two games, before then taking a pair, but then they fell in straight sets to Poland.

The Canadians face the second longest odds to win gold at a whopping +3500 line compared to ROC’s +320. They’ve been wholly average, winning nine sets and also losing nine, while ROC has a 13-5 tally. Canada is just too overmatched in this meeting to be given serious consideration.

Pick: ROC (-1050)

Brazil Should Have Easy Victory

Much like how the ROC-Canada battle should be one sided, another matchup looks to be the same, with Brazil favored even more over Japan. They won four of their five games, with the lone loss coming to ROC. Japan is a surprise to even make the quarters, as they entered as +8000 long shots to claim gold. They still have a huge uphill climb, as they now sit at +5000.

Brazil tops the world rankings, while Japan is all the way down in eleventh. The Japanese have fared well, and they have to be happy to be in this position. They came back from being down 2-1 in their final contest against Iran. Yuji Nishida was fantastic, finishing with 30 points. They’re a feel good story, but simply can’t hang with their counterparts.

Pick: Brazil (-1450)

Argentina With Upset Potential

Argentina wasn’t supposed to make it this far, but they defied the odds to post a solid pool stage, winning three of five matches. Though they won in straight sets to dispose of the United States, all three sets were a hard fought battle. Italy breezed through in the easier Pool A, winning four matches, only going to a fifth and deciding set once, in their first game.

Neither squad are in the top-four favorites to win gold, and the battle tested feisty Argentinians are peaking at the right time. After losing their first two times out, they’ve rallied to win the last three, and they present better value.

Pick: Argentina (+180)

Poland Might Have Tougher Test

At first blush, looking at the odds between Poland taking on France might seem askew. After all, Poland is the tournament favorite and have won four of five games, while France has dropped three of five. However, the French have come on strong in their last two games, defeating ROC in four sets, and they took Brazil the distance before losing.

France was a top-three favorite to win it all before the event kicked off, so they’re given a punchers chance in this game. Poland is too strong, however, led by Wilfredo Leon, considered the ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ of Volleyball.

Pick: Poland (-245)
