Eagles Favored to Extend Win Streak in Home Date with Hawks

The West Coast Eagles continued to roll in Round 11, overcoming a shaky first half with a crushing defensive performance after the break on their way to a 72-50 win over Carlton. With the victory, the Eagles extended the longest current win streak in the AFL to six matches and leapfrogged both St. Kilda and Richmond to move into fourth place on the ladder.

The Eagles have been dominant during their current surge, claiming victory by an average margin of 32.33 points, a pace they are well-positioned to maintain against the offensively challenged Hawks. The club has been particularly dominant in recent contests on their home turf at Optus Stadium, where they are undefeated in six contests this season while allowing more than 51 points on just one occasion.

Following a hopeful 3-1-0 win-loss-draw start to the season, the Hawks have struggled badly, losing five of six, capped by last week’s disappointing 48-32 defeat at the hands of the Fremantle Dockers. The club has struggled to generate offense during their current slide, averaging just 49.33 points per match, a stat that is deceivingly inflated by their 89-58 win over Carlton in Round 10.

Slow starts have proven costly to the Hawks, who have averaged fewer than 20 first-half points over their five recent losses. That is likely to spell trouble against the Eagles’ steady offense, which has topped 70 points in all but one home match this season.

Picks: West Coast Eagles-27.5 (-112); OVER 114.5 (-112)

Bulldogs Poised to End Slide vs Winless Crows

The Western Bulldogs are hoping to find a tonic for their recent slump as they host the bottom-feeding Adelaide Crows on Saturday as massive 34.5-point favorites. The Bulldogs are coming off a discouraging 96-72 loss to the surging Brisbane Lions, and have now fallen to defeat in each of their past three contests.

Now sporting a 5-6-0 record that leaves them in 11th place, and four points back of the GWS Giants for a spot among the top eight, the Bulldogs have been outclassed by elite opponents during their current slide. In addition to being routed by the Lions, the club has also suffered losses by double-digit margins to Richmond and Port Adelaide during their losing streak. However, they have enjoyed success against opponents sitting below the line, with each of their five wins coming against teams currently out of playoff contention.

While the Bulldogs are searching for answers, their struggles pale in comparison to the Crows, who ride a 14-match losing streak into their Round 12 tilt with the Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium. Adelaide’s latest defeat came last week against the visiting Collingwood Magpies, who waltzed to a 62-38 win.

In addition to going winless, the Crows have also consistently lost by big margins. The club has tallied just 75 total points over their past two outings, and have fallen to defeat by a massive average margin of 48 points over their past three contests. With the Crows’ struggling at both ends of the oval and faced with a hungry Bulldogs squad that is desperate for a win to stay in contention, long-suffering Adelaide fans should expect more of the same punishment this weekend.

Picks: Western Bulldogs -34.5 (-112); UNDER 127.5 (-112)

Lions Focus On First Place in Road Date with Roos

The Brisbane Lions will have a golden opportunity to close the gap on the league-leading Port Adelaide Power when they battle North Melbourne FC on Saturday as 29.5-point favorites. The Lions seized sole possession of second place on the ladder with last week’s demolition of the Bulldogs, and have now posted wins in four of their past five contests.

The Lions have powered their steady rise with the AFL’s highest-scoring offense, which has topped 80 points on six occasions so far this season. However, they have struggled at times to pile up the points on the road, scoring 53 or fewer points in three of their past five away matches.

That may not matter in Saturday’s date with the Kangaroos, who are coming off yet another anemic performance in last week’s 92-35 loss to the Melbourne Demons. The Kangaroos have now scored fewer than 40 points in three road dates, but have fared better as the home team, averaging almost 88 points per match in their past three. North Melbourne fans should have no illusions about their club earning an outright victory this weekend, but a victory against the spread in a low-scoring contest is well within reach.

Picks: North Melbourne FC +29.5 (-112); UNDER 116.5 (-112)
