College Baseball Pick #1: Georgia vs Oklahoma State Over 14.0 Runs

There should be plenty of mashing for Georgia vs Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State fought off elimination by dispatching of Binghamton 13-5 on Saturday, setting a school record by hitting seven home runs in an NCAA Tournament game, tied for seventh most in a tournament game all-time, two shy of the record.

Georgia, who was busy laying the wood to Binghamton to the tune of 20-4, was shut down by the Duke Blue Devils Saturday by a score of 6-3.

The Bulldogs are the NCAA’s home run leader and average a healthy 8.3 runs per game, which ranks inside college baseball’s Top 25, while the Cowboys are putting up 6.5 runs per game themselves.

For a team ranked seventh nationally, Georgia’s pitching is an issue. They were 12th in the SEC with a bloated 4.84 ERA, but their offense overshadowed those issues for much of the year.

We’ll see how it holds up against a Cowboys side that was third in Big 12 play in home runs but also in strikeouts.

Oklahoma State’s pitching is a strength, as it ranked fourth in the Big 12 with a 4.48 ERA, and held teams to a .255 average, but they’ll be tested by the Bulldogs offense.

College Baseball Pick #2: Florida -3.5 vs East Carolina

Talk about highs and lows. The Florida Gators were absolutely bombed in their opener to East Carolina, going down 9-0 through four innings and losing 11-6.

They turned it around Saturday with a major 17-2 thumping of Fairfield, and now the teams face off again with one team going home.

The Pirates were crushed by Coastal Carolina 18-7, as the winner in each game in the Conway Regional has scored at least 10 runs in every contest.

If Florida wants to get back to the World Series for a third straight year, their pitching will have to be better. The Gators were tied for 12th in the SEC with a 4.84 ERA. The win over Fairfield was a good start, limiting them to just five hits and two runs.

Even in defeat to Coastal Carolina, EC picked up 13 hits and scored seven times.

With such an embarassing defeat just a few days back, the Gators should be motivated to extract some sort of revenge over the Pirates.

College Baseball Pick #3: NC State -1.5 vs Stetson

It’s another revenge match in the Auburn regional, where the hometown Tigers are sitting pretty and waiting on the winner of this, while the loser’s season is over.

Stetson hammered NC State in the opener 11-2, as they amassed 13 hits against eight Wolfpack pitchers who saw action on this day.

The Wolfpack found their offense in a 12-0 drubbing of Central Connecticut State, ripping three home runs as part of 10 hits on the day, while the Hatters dropped an 8-5 decision to Auburn.

Stetson was second in hitting and first in ERA in the Atlantic Sun Conference this year, so they’re capable of winning in a myriad of ways.

Perhaps they caught NC State on just the wrong day? The Wolfpack are seventh in hitting and sixth in team ERA in the ACC, but they’re right in line with the Hatters’ numbers.

With that one game under their belt to figure themselves out, I like the Wolfpack to take the rematch and stay alive.

College Baseball Pick #4: Arizona State vs UC Irvine Under 13.5 runs

Let’s wrap with the Los Angeles Region, where it’s win or go home for both the Arizona State Sun Devils and UC Irvine Anteaters Sunday.

These teams met in their respective openers in the tournament, with ASU outlasting UC Irvine 4-2.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this matchup was the score, and the two teams’ lack of firepower so far in the NCAA Tournament.

UC Irvine did win 8-3 over Fresno State to stay alive, which is more in line with their offense from the regular season, when they hit .299 in the Big West (2nd) and scored the most runs.

The Sun Devils hit .314 as a team and scored 8.3 runs per game, both tops in the Big 12, with their scoring a Top 30 ranking nationwide.

Yet, they’ve scored a total of nine runs over two games, after getting stopped 11-5 by UCLA, who is into the regional final.

While the two teams went way under the total in their first meeting, I don’t think the offensive versions of themselves is quite here in the regional, so we’ll stay below that hefty total.
