If the Florida Gators (38-21) want a trip back to a third consecutive College World Series, they’re going to have fight to get there. The Gators lost their opener to East Carolina in the Conway Regional, and now stare down an elimination game vs the Fairfield Stags, who was dumped by Coastal Carolina.
The Gators were one of the early start times on Friday, but it will be less than a 12-hour turnaround for the Stags, who had to wait out a severe weather warning, a delay that took them to a 10:30pm ET start, in a game that finished past midnight.
Action gets underway at 12pm ET from Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina, with ESPN+ providing coverage.

Florida vs Fairfield Odds
The Gators are massive -620 moneyline favorites, with Fairfield at a distant +400 as the underdog. The run line is set at 5.5, with the total set at 15.5 runs.

The winner of this game survives to play again in this double-elimination format, while the loser is done. Only one winner emerges from each of the 16 regionals, and moves to the Super Regionals, where the remaining 16 teams are split into eight pairings. Those teams will play a best-of-3 series. The winners of each will advance to the College World Series.
Florida entered the tournament as a +3850 longshot in the College World Series odds, just outside the top-15 favorites. Fairfield was a +100000 afterthought, tied for the longest odds in the 64-team field.
Florida vs Fairfield Picks and Predictions
- Florida -5.5 (-115 at Bet365)
The Gators looked nothing like the team that entered the NCAA Tournament winning 15 of its last 20.
Instead, starting pitcher Liam Peterson was shredded, Florida was down 9-0 midway through the fourth inning, and Florida got crushed 11-6 by East Carolina.
Seven Florida pitchers were used in this one, but none had an answer, as the Pirates picked up 15 hits in this one.
Offensively, a team that ranked Top 6 in hitting, runs, home runs and RBI in the mighty SEC was shut down by sophomore Ethan Norby, who went 7 1/3 innings, scattering six hits and three earned runs while fanning 10.
The Gators turn the ball over to freshman Aidan King in their biggest game of the season. King was 6-2 on the season with a team-best 2.76 ERA, with 72 strikeouts in just over 65 innings of work.
While Florida has been a fixture at the CWS, their opponent Saturday is making only its third NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and first since 2016.
The Fairfield Stags just couldn’t get the offense going in a 10-2 drubbing at the hands of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, the top seed in this region and 13th overall.
A team that ranked Top 2 in batting average, hits, homers, RBI’s and slugging percentage in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Fairfield was shut down by starter Cameron Flukey, who gave up just three hits and two runs over 7 1/3 innings and striking out nine.
The Stags will likely turn to Bowen Bake on the mound, with the season on the line. He was 8-1 on the year with a crisp 3.20 ERA, both Top 2 marks in the MAAC. Bake is coming off a a complete game win over Rider at the MAAC Championship Tournament.
With a win to stay in, I’m leaning towards the Gators and all that school’s recent experience to help them rebound from a no-show performance to kick off their NCAA Tournament.
A Florida side that was thoroughly embarrassed in its opener is not good news for the Stags, who will likely see the Gators’ extremely focussed on staying alive. Fairfiled was overwhelmed in the opener vs Coastal Carolina, and I believe the trend continues as the bracket thins out one of the four from the Conway region.
