St Francis (NY) (11-11, 4-5 NEC) is a 1.5-point home underdog against Central Connecticut in a Northeast Conference game at 2 pm ET Thursday on NEC Front Row. The Terriers have won five of their last seven.

Central Connecticut (6-17, 4-5 NEC) opened the season with a nine-game losing streak but has won two of its last three. The Blue Devils blew out Saint Francis 74-52 as a 1.5-point home favorite in the first meeting this season.

St Francis is 11-9 ATS this season, the only Northeast Conference team with a winning record against the number.  The Terriers are 6-3 ATS at home. Central Connecticut is 11-12 ATS, 6-6 on the road. Saint Francis has been under the total in 15 of its 20 games. The Blue Devils are 11-12 against the total.

Saint Francis (NY) Looks for a Split

The Terriers were blown out in the first meeting between the two, a 74-52 loss in New Britain on New Year’s Eve, when they shot 28.8 percent from the field and were 2 of 15 from distance. Losses to expected league contenders Fairleigh Dickinson and Merrimack followed, but the Terriers have won five of seven since to even their season record. They are 4-2 SU and ATS in their last six and have won and covered in their last two, against Wagner and LIU, the latter the co-called Battle of Brooklyn.

The Terriers have gone 5-2 in the last seven games while mixing and matching to compensate for the loss of leading scorer and point guard 6’1 Rob Higgins (11.4 points, 3.6 assists) and guard 5’11 Larry Moreno (10.6 points). Higgins has not played since Jan. 7 for undisclosed reasons and Moreno has missed the last three games. Both are seniors.

Guard 6’6 Tedrick Wilcox Jr. (10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds) has picked up the slack in the last seven, averaging 14.9 points while making 16 of 35 threes. Sophomore reserve guard 6’3 Zion Bethea is averaging 12.7 points over the same span. He had 18 points, six assists and three steals in the 71-59 victory over LIU.

Central Connecticut Back on Track

The Blue Devils seem to have straightened themselves out after opening the season on a nine-game losing streak, a run that included (expected) blowout road losses to St. John’s and Rutgers but also included home losses to Maine and Brown.  Six of those games were on the road, and four were decided by eight points or less. Still … Since then, the Blue Devils are 6-8 SU and 8-6 ATS and seem to have secured one of eight postseason tournament spots in the nine-team Northeast after being picked to finish sixth in the preseason coaches’ poll.

Binghamton transfer guard 6’6 Kellen Amos (14. 8 points) is the scoring leader on a smallish team that does not score much — 65.1 points per game, 330th in Division I, 42.4 shooting percentage. Point guard 6’1 Nigel Scantlebury (10.1 points, 3.7 assists), and forward 6’6 Andre Snoddy (9.3 points, 8.0 rebounds) are the other main contributors. Preseason NEC all-league choice Scantlebury led the league last season with a 41.4 shooting percentage from three-point range but is shooting only 27.8 percent this season.

NEC leading rebounder Snoddy has double-doubles in his last four games, going 15/11 in an 88-74 victory over Saint Francis (PA) the last time out Saturday, the Blue Devils’ highest scoring game of the season.

Central Connecticut vs Saint Francis (NY) Prediction

This is not appointment viewing. Neither teams shoots better than 42.5 percent from the floor. Both are being outrebounded by nearly two boards per game.
