It’s only fitting that the Western Athletic Conference’s best school duel for the lone bid into the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The top-seeded Utah Valley Wolverines (25-7, 14-4 WAC) are slight betting favorites in the college basketball odds, as they take on the second-seeded California Baptist Lancers (24-8, 13-5 WAC).

There’s not a ton separating these teams, and its reflective in how close the online sportsbooks have it. A CBU upset pays out a modest +105, but backing UVU comes in at just -125 odds.

Picking the Wolverines to win by a bucket? That will pay out to -105 odds, while the Lancers are getting an extra 1.5 points, and pays at -115 odds.

The total is set at 138.5 points, split down the middle, with the Over and Under paying out at -110 odds.

California Baptist vs Utah Valley Prediction

  • Under 138.5 points (-110) at DraftKings

California Baptist has been on fire, with a dynamite 14-2 record over its last 16, and is currently riding a 5-game win streak.

They’ve been punching up from that 73.3 scoring average of late, scoring at least 82 points in each of their last four contests, including last game’s 86-72 win over Utah Tech to punch their ticket into the WAC Tourney Final.

The Lancers have played the Wolverines tough this season, but don’t have the results to show for it. In their first meeting on Dec 29, CBU built a six-point lead at the half, but were badly outplayed in the second half, getting outscored 40-27 in a 73-66 loss.

Their second meeting on Feb 19 and Utah Valley took apart the Lancers, winning by nearly 20 points, while holding CBU to just 46 points — their lowest scoring output of the season.

That being said, Utah Valley hasn’t been great themselves. They just barely survived their semifinal with UT Arlington, escaping with a 67-65 decision.

A game prior, they were taken to double overtime by Utah Tech. These close games have been somehow stacked one by one with each other, with their last five wins all by single digits.

If you’re a glass-half-full type, then this stretch of games for the Wolverines showed they could play different styles to get tot the end goal.

A glass-half-full pessimist would argue that the Wolverines can’t continue to compete in these high-pressure games, as eventually all good runs come to an end.

I think it’s safe to say that the absolute grind of a season to get to this point has a lot of teams and players weary.

And that leads me to believe that both schools will lean on their defense, as they each ranked inside the Top 3 in points allowed in the WAC. Considering the Under has cashed in both games this season, I’m guessing we’re heading down this path again.
