The Charleston Classic tips off with a first-round game between Furman and Penn State at 11:30 a.m. ET Thursday at TD Arena.

Furman (2-0) beat Belmont 89-74 last Friday in its first game against a Division I team this season. Penn State (3-0) stayed perfect by downing Butler 68-62 on Monday at home.

Furman Betting Trends

Furman has three returning starters from last season when it reached the Southern Conference Tournament championship game. Each is scoring in double figures in the early going this season.

Senior guard Mike Bothwell is averaging 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He was a first-team All-SoCon pick in 2021-22.

Senior forward Jalen Slawson was also on the first team. So far this season, he is scoring 17.0 points, grabbing 6.5 rebounds, making 3.0 steals and dishing 2.5 assists a game.

Both shined in the win over Belmont.

Bothwell had 25 points, six rebounds and three steals while shooting 10 of 17 from the field. Slawson filled plenty of columns on the stat sheet with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The third returning starter, junior guard Marcus Foster, has an 11.0 scoring average. He hit the number on the nose against Belmont.

Garrett Hien also shined last Friday. The junior forward contributed 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting along with five rebounds and three assists.

The Paladins shot 58.3% (35 for 60) from the floor and 42.1% (8 of 19) on three-pointers. Furman also held a whopping 42-22 rebounds advantage, though it did have 16 turnovers.

Penn State Betting Trends

Senior guard Jalen Pickett continued his fine start to the season by recording a triple-double in the victory over Butler.

Pickett had 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. He raised his season averages to 14.3 points, 9.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds.

Penn State also played strong defense. The Nittany Lions held Butler to 34.3% (23 of 67) from the field and 21.7% (5 of 23) from distance.

Senior guards Andrew Funk and Camren Wynter, a pair of transfers, chipped in with 11 points apiece. Senior wing Seth Lundy added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Funk starred at Bucknell and Wynter was a standout at Drexel.

In all, Penn State has five players with double figure scoring averages. Following Pickett are Wynter (12.7), Funk (12.0), Lundy (10.0) and senior wing Myles Dread (10.0).

Wynter is also averaging 3.0 assists a game.

Furman vs Penn State Prediction

This will be the first meeting between the schools since Penn State won 70-49 during the 2010-11 season at home. This game figures to be a lot closer. The nod goes to the Nittany Lions and their power conference pedigree.
