#18 North Carolina will try to get back on track when it visits Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. ET Sunday in the ACC opener for both teams at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.

North Carolina (5-3/0-1 road/1-6-1 ATS) has lost three games in a row, including falling 77-65 at Indiana on Wednesday, after beginning the season ranked as the #1 team in the country.

Virginia Tech (7-1/5-0/2-6 ATS) has won back-to-back games, including beating Minnesota 67-57 on Monday.

North Carolina Betting Outlook

Defense has been a problem for North Carolina. The Tar Heels are allowing 75.4 points a game, which ranks 320th among the 363 Division I teams.

Indiana shot 50% (31 of 62) on Wednesday and outscored North Carolina 50-24 in the paint.

The Tar Heels also made just nine of their first 35 field goal attempts before making 11 of their last 24 to finish at 33.9% (20 of 59). They were 27.8% (5 of 18) on three-point tries.

Senior forward Pete Nance had his first double-double for North Carolina as the Northwestern transfer finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. He is averaging 12.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in his first season in Chapel Hill.

Junior guard Caleb Love, the ACC’s leading scorer, had 13 points, which represented a down night in a strong start to the season. Love has averages of 19.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals.

Senior forward Armando Bacot injured his right shoulder in the first half then played the second half after having it taped. The preseason All-American had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double in the last five games.

Bacot is scoring 16.1 points, grabbing 11.1 rebounds, and blocking 1.5 shots a game. He is second in the conference in rebounding and fifth in blocks.

Junior guard R.J. Davis chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds. He is averaging 15.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

Virginia Tech Betting Outlook

Defense and rebounding helped Virginia Tech beat Minnesota. The Golden Gophers shot just 36.7% (22 of 60) overall 26.1 (6 of 23) from distance, while the Hokies held a commanding 42-27 rebounding margin.

Sophomore guard Sean Pedulla had 17 points to lead Virginia Tech, which was right at his season average of 17.1 points a game. He is also distributing 4.0 assists per game.

Pedulla is the ACC’s third-leading scorer.

Senior forward Justyn Mutts played a big part in the win with 16 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots.

After originally entering the NBA Draft, Mutts returned to Blacksburg and is having a fine season with averages of 12.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. His 58.7 field goal percentage is second in the ACC.

Virginia Tech has gotten a big lift from senior forward Grant Basile, a transfer from Wright State. He is averaging 14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds while standing third in the conference with 2.1 blocks a game.

Junior guard Darius Maddox has a 10.4 scoring average.

North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Prediction

Virginia Tech ended North Carolina’s four-game winning streak in the series with a 72-59 in last season’s ACC Tournament. Maddox scored 20 points for the Hokies and Bacot had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who didn’t lose again until the national championship game against Kansas.

Look for North Carolina to gain some revenge here. It’s hard to believe a team as talented as the Tar Heels could lose four games in a row.
