No. 8 UConn (8-0) is a 9.5-point home favorite over Oklahoma State in the Big East/Big 12 Battle at 7:30 pm ET Thursday at Gampel Pavilion on FS1. The Huskies jumped 12 spots in the AP poll this week after winning the Phil Knight Invitational with a dominating three-game sweep last weekend.
Oklahoma State (5-2) has won three straight, starting with a victory at DePaul on Nov. 20. The Cowboys are 1-2 in the Big East/Big 12 battle, falling to Xavier last season after beating Marquette the year before. UConn lost in its only appearance, at West Virginia last season.

UConn is a 9.5-point home favorite over Oklahoma State as part of the Big East/Big 12 Battle in the third meeting between the two. The last came in in 2016, when Oklahoma State posted a 98-90 victory in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

UConn has been a spread-buster so far at 7-1 ATS, failing to cover only as a 20.5-point favorite in an 84-64 home victory over Buffalo on Nov. 15. The total has gone over the number in five UConn games, and in four of the last five. Oklahoma State is 3-4 ATS and covered its last two as double-digit favorites against Tulsa and Prairie View A&M.
UConn Busts Out of the Gate
UConn coach Dan Hurley’s mindset this season is for his team to go from contenders to champions, and early results have been promising. The Huskies overpowered Oregon, Alabama and Iowa State by a combined 57 points to win the Phil Knight Invitational last week. They missed North Carolina in the field but easily handled Iowa State, which beat the Tar Heels in the final. Â UConn has not been ranked this high since Jan. 2, 2012.

Physical 6’9 forward Adama Sanogo is a strong inside presence — averaging 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game — and he has help inside from 7’2 freshman Donovan Clingan, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa State and is averaging 9.5 points, 6./5 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game off the bench. Senior returnee Tristan Newton is averaging 12.6 points and 4.8 assists per game for a team that is holding opponents to 38.4 percent shooting from the floor and has a plus-11.7 rebounding margin.
Discounting the 2020-21 Covid season, the last three UConn teams to go undefeated in November have made the Final Four. The last two have won the national title, the last in 2014.
Oklahoma State Matches Up
The balanced Cowboys have five players averaging at least 9.6 points, led by guard Avery Anderson III at 12.7. They are at their best on the defensive end, where 6’10 Moussa Cisse anchors the back line. Cisse is averaging 10 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocked shots per game, ranking fourth in Division I in blocks. He has four double-doubles.
Moussa Cisse's final seven games of last season for Oklahoma State: 10.1 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 2.6 BPG. Could be the best center in the Big 12 this season. All-conference caliber ability.

With rim protectors such Cisse and 6’9 Kalib Boone (9.6 points, 5.4 rebounds), the Cowboys have held their last nine opponents and 14 of their last 16 to under 40 percent shooting from the field. While the caliber of competition does not rank with UConn’s, Oklahoma State’s opponents are shooting 36.1 percent this season, 27.3 percent from three-point range. At the same time, the Cowboys have not been effective on offense from the three-point line, making only 5.9 threes per game while shooting 29.3 percent.
Oklahoma State vs UConn Prediction
This is a dangerous spot for UConn, which returns home heroes for a stop against the Cowboys before playing Florida in Gainesville next Wednesday. The Huskies have not started 9-0 since the 2014 national title team did it. Both teams here can defend, which should keep this one close.
