The top-seeded Auburn Tigers (19-16), the last power conference program still standing at the NIT, looks to punch its ticket to the tournament Final Four when they host the 2-seed Nevada Wolf Pack (24-12) Wednesday night.

They’re pegged as strong home favorites in the college basketball odds against a Nevada side that has won both its NIT games by double digits.

Auburn vs Nevada Picks & Predictions

  • Pick: Nevada +9.5 (-110 at BetMGM)

Auburn got its scare in Round 2, as Seattle University went toe-to-toe with them in a shootout, with the Tigers eventually holding off their opponent for a 91-85 victory.

Concerning for Tigers was the fact they couldn’t build on an 11-point halftime lead, instead getting outscored 54-49 in the half. That’s been a problem for the SEC school all season, as they ranked 12th in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 7.9.2 points per game.

However, it was encouraging that Auburn found a way to gut out a win along the margins, with a glaring 41-23 rebound advantage, while enjoying a 24-7 point advantage at the free throw line. Kevin Overton scored 16 of his 23 in the second half to help land the plane and advance to the quarters.

Nevada was right in the middle of the pack in Mountain West, seventh in scoring (76.2 points) and sixth in points allowed (71.4 points).

They should be able to give the Tigers’ defense fits, as the team boasts four double-digit scorers in Corey Camper Jr (16.8 ppg), Elijah Price (12.6), Tayshawn Comer (11.3) and Vaughn Weems (10).

The Wolf Pack got a triple double from Camper Jr last game in its 73-63 win over Liberty. His 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists gave Nevada a win in its home finale of the season, finishing a sparkling 17-2.

It’s a different story on the road, where they were just 4-8 on the season, and where they have the unenviable task of trying to knock off the Tigers, who hold an incredible nonconference home winning streak of 66 games — a stretch that began Nov. 11, 2016.

But they don’t need to win outright to make you a betting winner — they just need to cover the spread. And Auburn has not been a great bet against the spread of late, going just 2-8-0 against the spread in its last 10.

They’ve also failed to cover both games at the NIT. I like Auburn to advance, but that shaky defense keeps Nevada within range.
