The #11 seed UCLA Bruins will try to continue their improbable run in the NCAA Tournament when they play the #1 Michigan Wolverines at 9:57 pm ET on Tuesday in the East Region final at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Forced to play in the First Four as it entered the tourney on a four-game losing streak, UCLA (21-9) beat #2 Alabama 88-78 in overtime Sunday in the regional semifinals as a seven-point underdog. The Bruins are trying to become the second team to advance from the First Four to the Final Four, joining VCU, which did so in 2011.

Michigan (23-4) rolled to a 76-58 victory over #4 Florida State as a 1.5-point favorite and are chalk again against UCLA. The Wolverines have won their three tournament games by an average margin of 15.3 points after entering with three losses in their previous five games.

Another Upset for UCLA

Junior guard Jules Bernard and sophomore wing Jaime Jaquez Jr. each had 17 points as six UCLA players scored in double figures Sunday.

The Bruins outscored Alabama 23-13 in overtime. They bounced back after the Crimson Tide’s Alex Reese made a three-point field goal at the buzzer in regulation to force the extra period.

Jaquez took control in overtime. His jumper put UCLA ahead 74-68 and his three-pointer made It 77-70. Jaquez also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Junior guard David Singleton scored 15 points to tie a career high in 20 minutes of reserve duty. Sophomore guard Tyger Campbell had 13 points and five assists, sophomore guard Johnny Juzang also scored 13 and junior forward Cody Riley contributed 10 points and four blocked shots.

Singleton scored in double figures for just the fourth time this season and Campbell reached double digits for the first time in nine games.

UCLA shot just 39.2% (29 of 74) from the field but held Alabama to 25.0% (7 of 28) from behind the arc. The Crimson Tide lead the nation in three-pointers made and attempted.

Juzang, who made just 1 of 6 from three-point range Sunday, leads UCLA in scoring with a 15.0 average. He is one of five Bruins in double figures along with Jaquez (12.4), Bernard (10.7), Campbell (10.4), and Riley (10.0).

Jaquez (6.1) and Bernard (5.0) are combining for 11.1 rebounds a game. Campbell is averaging 5.4 assists.

Michigan Rolls Along

Behind freshman center Hunter Dickinson and junior forward Brandon Johns Jr., Michigan used a strong inside game to down Florida State. Dickinson had 14 points and eight rebounds and Johns finished with a season-high 14 points and six boards.

The Wolverines held a 50-28 advantage in points in the paint. They also limited Florida State to a season low in overall points and 25.0% (5 of 25) on three-pointers while forcing 14 turnovers.

Sophomore guard Franz Wagner had a fine all-round effort with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Wagner notched his third double-double of the season.

Senior guard Chaundee Brown Jr. chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Michigan played without second-leading scorer Isaiah Livers for a fifth straight game. The senior forward, who is averaging 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds, has a foot injury.

Coach Juwan Howard was again vague about Livers’ status following the game, saying only that he is “out indefinitely.”

Dickinson is averaging 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds to lead the Wolverines. Wagner has averages of 12.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.

Thriller Three Seasons Ago

The schools last met during the 2017-18 season and Michigan won 78-69 in overtime at home. The only starter from that game who will suit up Tuesday night is Wolverines senior guard Eli Brooks, who scored seven points.

While the oddsmakers expect Michigan to win again this time, UCLA has the look of a team on a magical March run. Perhaps it will end against the Wolverines, but the Bruins have what it takes to keep things close.
