Two heavyweight College Football programs are set to do battle in Atlanta as the Oregon Ducks visit the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs have opened as 17.5-point favorites in one of the marquee matchups of Week 1 on Saturday, September 3rd. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Remarkably, these two teams have only faced off once before in their storied histories. Georgia won that contest 27-16 way back in 1977.

Could Oregon Shock the World?
College football is extremely cyclical. Dan Lanning won the National Championship as Georgia’s defensive coordinator last January. He’ll begin his career as head coach at Oregon against his former squad in week 1.
The Ducks return former 5-star recruit Ty Thompson at quarterback. However, that didn’t stop them from adding much hyped Auburn Transfer Bo Nix. Nix played under Oregon’s new offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham as a freshman for the Tigers. That should give the Junior quarterback a leg up on his competition. Although, Thompson can really sling it.

Oregon has yet to name a starting quarterback. But, it will be Lanning’s defense that keeps them in this game.
The Ducks front seven will be the backbone of this football team. Even after losing Kayvon Thibodeaux, this defense certainly does not lack for talent. Linebacker Noah Sewell is one of the best off-ball linebackers in the country, and has a chance to be a first round NFL draft pick next April. Brandon Dorlus, Bradyn Swinson, and DJ Johnson are an explosive group up front. Ultimately, this unit could surprise some people this season, and may be able to do just enough versus Georgia to keep Oregon in the game.
Georgia Look to Make a Statement
The 2022 Georgia Bulldogs have a point to prove. Yes, they are the reigning National Champions. Yet, many fans and pundits alike give them little chance to compete for the top prize this season. Given that the Bulldogs lost a monumental amount of talent to the NFL, you’d be forgiven for making the same assumption. Just don’t tell this team that.

Georgia is 10-4-1 vs the Pac-12 All-Time. With each of their losses coming before 1980. More importantly, Stetson Bennett returns to lead this beefed up offense. Aided by the transfer of former 5-star tight end Arik Gilbert, this offense has a chance to be even more physically dominant in 2022.
Head coach Kirby Smart and his team will surely look to make a statement in this one. Smart will want to set the tone against his former protege, much as Alabama coach Nick Saban has in games against his former assistants.
Expected Line Movement of Oregon vs Georgia Odds
As noted above, there’s very little history for odds makers to bank on for this Week 1 tussle. Georgia is coming off an explosively dominant season offensively, averaging 6.98 yards per play and 38 points per game in 2021. With Oregon welcoming a new coaching staff, and fresh schemes on both sides of the ball, hanging with the Bulldogs will be difficult.

The largest unknown remains the identity of Oregon’s starting quarterback. As of writing Dan Lanning has yet to name his starter for the upcoming season. If, as expected Bo Nix wins the job, little should change on the odds front. However, should the inexperienced Ty Thompson somehow come away victorious, the odds could skew even further in Georgia’s favour.
Ultimately, this Oregon team could surprise some people this season. The Ducks boast legitimate NFL-level talent on both sides of the ball. At the same time, Georgia is the reigning National Champion for a reason. Their backups would start for the majority of teams across the country. Expect the line to move a few more points in Georgia’s favor as the public money starts rolling in.
