LSU National Championship Odds Get Shorter After Convincing Win Over Previously Undefeated Florida

• The LSU Tigers’ National Championship odds have shortened to +550
• They’re fresh off a convincing victory over Florida and moved up to #2 in the AP top 25
• Is LSU a good bet to win the 2020 CFP?

LSU made a statement on Saturday night, defeating previously unbeaten Florida by two touchdowns (42-28). The Tigers are now 6-0, with perhaps the most impressive pair of victories in all of college football, and have become a top-four contender for the National Title.

Their National Championship odds are now shorter than Oklahoma and slightly behind only Ohio State, Clemson and Alabama. The victory over Florida vaulted them up to number two in the AP top-25 rankings and no one deserves more credit for their success than Heisman candidate Joe Burrow.

Burrow is Ballin’

The senior QB continued his incredible season Saturday night lighting up a stout Gators defense that was just a week removed from completely shutting down Auburn. He completed 87.5% of his passes, threw three touchdowns and helped the Tigers accumulate over 500 yards of offense without committing a turnover or taking a sack.

He leads the Nation in completion percentage (79.6%) and passer rating (218.1), and is second in touchdowns (25) and passing yards (2,157). Digging a little deeper we find he ranks top five in deep passes and throws under pressure, with a clean pocket, and off of play action.

LSU’s offense leads the FBS in points per game with 52.5 and is second only to Oklahoma in yards per game with 561. This offense is scary good and Burrow might be playing better than any other quarterback in all of college football.

A Small Reason for Concern

Right now the only reason to not be all in on the Tigers is their defense. They gave up 28 points to Florida, after previously allowing both Texas and Vanderbilt to hang 38 a piece on them. For the season they’re holding opponents to a respectable 21.2 points per game, but that’s considerably more than fellow SEC contenders Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Florida.

Their pass rush is average at best and they’ve only forced six turnovers. They’ve yet to play a truly elite offense and it will be fascinating to see how much of a fight they put up against Tua Tagovailoa and the Crimson Tide in a few weeks. Of course their offense is good enough to go score for score with anybody, but at some point they’re going to need a lot more production out of this unit.

LSU Still Offers Value

They’re the number two ranked team in the Nation, yet they have the fourth shortest National Championship odds. We’ll learn much more about them in a few weeks when they kickoff back-to-back games against Auburn and Alabama, but until then let’s take advantage of the fact that they’re not priced where they should be.
