After six wildly successful seasons at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin has opted to move to LSU to replace Brian Kelly. A 14-year FBS head coaching veteran, Kiffin will take over his third SEC school, following one season at Tennessee (2009) and this run at Ole Miss (2020-2025).
In his place, the Rebels have elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding to be the head coach for Ole Miss’ playoff run in 2025 and beyond into 2026.
Sportsbooks have capitalized on the fervor around Kiffin’s departure by posting the 2026 LSU vs Ole Miss odds.
LSU vs Ole Miss Odds
LSU opens as a slight, 1.5-point road favorite in the 2026 version of LSU vs Ole Miss at FanDuel. The total is set at 58.5 points with equal -110 juice on both the over and the under in the opening line.
The moneyline favors LSU, slightly. LSU bettors can take the Tigers at -111 on the moneyline or -1.5 on the spread at -104 odds. Ole Miss bettors can take the Rebels at -108 on the moneyline or +1.5 on the spread at -118 odds. This line will surely move as the breadth of the Kiffin move becomes clear, including the coaches following him and LSU’s incoming transfer portal.
In 2025, Ole Miss was 2.5-point home favorites, a mark which the Rebels covered. The total was set at 57.5, but the under cleared by more than two touchdowns.

Ole Miss vs LSU Factors to Watch
With the transfer portal taking center stage in early January, neither LSU nor Ole Miss have stable rosters. Ole Miss in particular in doubly important as a pivot school. Many players will leave Ole Miss following Kiffin’s departure. Some will follow to Kiffin to LSU while others could feel betrayed by the Rebels or Kiffin and move elsewhere.
Ole Miss should also be considered a major player in terms of adding pieces, but they are behind schedule as they just elevated Pete Golding to the head coach mantel in recent days. The CFP-bound Rebels hope for their season to extend into the transfer portal window which opens the day after the CFP Quarterfinals wrap up, adding another wrinkle to the equation if the Rebels lost in the first round or quarterfinals.
LSU’s Roster
The Tigers’ roster turnover begins with quarterback Garrett Nussmeier who has exhausted his college eligibility. LSU could look internally at Michael Van Buren Jr. who transferred in from Mississippi State and played six games this season. The Tigers could also opt for a veteran route as they did with Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels before the Nussmeier days.
LSU will likely have to wait to see what transfer quarterbacks become available. For example, Cal’s true freshman quarterback Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele could be on the move after head coach Justin Wilcox was fired. Beyond Sagapolutele, other options could include Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss, USF’s Byrum Brown, and other speculative efforts.
According to 24/7, LSU had the No.1 transfer class in 2025. Kiffin led Ole Miss to the No.4 spot. In particular, LSU was able to overhaul its defense by bringing in the likes of A.J. Haulcy and Mansoor Delane. Could the 2026 class be offensive-focused and propel the Tigers into serious national title contention?
Ole Miss’ New Head Coach
The Rebels have elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach following Kiffin’s departure. Golding has 20 years of coaching experience after his playing days at Delta State. He had been a defensive assistant for Alabama from 2018 to 2022 before joining the Rebels in 2023.
Unlike Kiffin, Golding’s specialty is the defensive side. This has potential roster consequences that would be pure speculation at this point. Golding’s main focus now is leading Ole Miss to CFP wins and potentially a national championship. His recruiting philosophy, no matter what it is, would be boosted with a deep run.
Ole Miss’ Roster
The tip of the spear is quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. While he is in his last year of eligibility now, he has reportedly filed a waiver to play a sixth season and return for 2026. If the waiver is successful, he could return to Oxford. He could also transfer out, potentially to LSU to follow Kiffin.
Last season, Ole Miss did a major overhaul in the transfer portal, bringing in one of the bigger classes: 30 players. Their class included stars on the 2025, notably Chambliss as well as leading rusher Kewan Lacy and the Rebels’ top two receivers.
LSU vs Ole Miss: Recent History
LSU and Ole Miss complete in the Magnolia Bowl. LSU leads this rivalry all-time 64-43-4. The Tigers have been particularly dominant at home, last losing in Baton Rouge back in 2008. Next season, Ole Miss will look to post back-to-back wins over LSU for the first time since 2008 and 2009. The rivalry itself dates back to 1894, with a continuous series since the end of World War II.
In 2025, Ole Miss won a defensive battle 24-19. The Rebels took a 17-7 lead just before the half and held on in the second half to win by five. Trinidad Chambliss had 385 yards of total offense to fuel the Rebels, despite only throwing for one touchdown. On the LSU side, Garrett Nussmeier struggled, averaging under 6.0 yards per pass and matching his passing touchdown with an interception.
