Nevada (2-4, 0-2 Mountain West) is a 6.5-point road favorite over Hawaii in a Mountain West game in Honolulu at 11:59 pm ET Saturday on Spectrum Sports. Nevada has lost four in a row.

Hawaii (1-5, 0-1) has lost two in a row after its only win of the season, 24-14 over FCS Duquesne of the Northeast Conference. The Rainbow Warriors have scored more than two touchdowns in a game only twice this season.

Nevada Relies on Taua, Takeaways

Nevada running back Toa Taua remains the focal point in first-year coach Ken Wilson’s “pistol” offense, a change from the Air Raid style featured by former coach Jay Norvell.

Taua had 80 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 17-14 victory over Colorado State the last time out, his second consecutive two-score game.  He leads the Wolf Pack with 430 yards rushing and eight touchdowns (seven rushing) while moving up to seventh in career rushing (3,516 yards) in school history.

The Wolf Pack’s quarterback play has been sub-standard. Two signal-callers have combined to throw two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Pack is 122nd in total offense and 118th in rushing in NCAA Division I.

It is not all bad news here. Nevada defensive back Bentlee Sanders is tied for the Division I lead with five interceptions, and the Wolf Pack have 14 takeaways, including nine picks. They have committed nine turnovers.

Hawaii Regroups … Somewhat

The Rainbow Warriors were blown out 168-37 in season-opening losses to Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and Michigan but have looked a little better in their last three, although a Big Island’s worth of improvement remains to be made.

Halfback Dedrick Parson leads the team with 336 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, but quarterback Brayden Schager has completed only 59 percent of his passes for 855 yards. He has thrown two touchdowns and four interceptions, and backup Joey Yellen has thrown two picks.

First-year coach Timmy Chang went back and forth between Schager and Yellen early in the season, but Schager went all the way and passed for 196 yards and a score in a 16-14 loss to San Diego State the last time out. The Aztecs, who outgained Hawaii 417-342, won on a 26-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining.

Nevada vs Hawaii Common Opponents

The teams have played one common opponent, New Mexico State, in games that had decidedly different results. Nevada won and covered as a 7-point favorite in a 23-12 victory at Las Cruces on Aug. 27. Tuau had 19 carries for 109 yards, and the Wolf Pack put it away with four interceptions and a 5-0 turnover edge.

Hawaii lost and failed to cover as a 4.5-point underdog in a 45-26 loss in Las Cruces on Sept. 24.  Running back Star Thomas had 144 of New Mexico State’s 357 rushing yards in that one, and the Aggies led 42-10 halfway into the third quarter.

Nevada vs Hawaii Prediction

Nevada and Hawaii have two of the worst offenses in Division I — Nevada is averaging 293.3 yards per game and Hawaii is at 318. Neither quarterback has shown much in the way of making plays, so the game could devolve into a slog-fest. That plays directly into the hands of Taua and Nevada, inasmuch as Hawaii gives up 233.2 rushing yards per game.

While taking the points is tempting, look for Nevada to take another step toward reaching their CFB win totals odds. The best way to wager on this late-night matchup is to take the Wolf Pack to cover the spread.
