The market to become the next head coach of the Florida Gators is heating up.

Currently, the betting favorite over at Kalshi is Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, but there are also other big-name notables in the mix, including recently-fired Penn State head coach James Franklin and current Missouri Tigers’ head coach Eli Drinkwitz.

Florida is one of the premier schools in the ultra-competitive SEC and have won three national championships.

Kiffin is the overwhelming top trading pick at Kalshi, with a 52% chance he bolts from his current role with the Rebels.

Just recently fired from Penn State, Franklin has the next best odds at +335, followed by Drinkwitz at +669.

Would Kiffin Jump from Ole Miss?

We’ll start with Lane Kiffin, who always seems to be a candidate whenever high-profile jobs are available.

He’s considered a premier head coach, and he’s led Ole Miss to three 10+ win seasons over the last four years, finishing ranked 13th or better in each of those campaigns. Perhaps the biggest reason Kiffin is appealing is his ability to get the most out of his program among the titans in the SEC.

Kiffin doesn’t have a College Football Playoff run in his time with the Rebels, but Ole Miss is very much currently in the running this year.

A lot will hinge on whether he thinks the Gators are a glamour organization, as opposed to what he’s built up in his time with the Rebels.

The school is linked to Kiffin with a $9 million salary per season, cracking the Top 10 in coaches’ rankings by salary. Jumping to another SEC team (with deeper pockets and better resources) might be beneficial to Kiffin’s career.

Franklin Was Elite at Penn State

Franklin knows how to run a good program and has proven his ability to turn a program around. Before this season that led to his ouster, he had the Nittany Lions at the 10-win level for three years running.

That included 2024, when PSU won 13 games and reached the CFP semifinals.

Pedigree-wise, the Big Ten is a Power 5 conference, so no worries about navigating the SEC waters.

Perhaps the biggest question would be if Franklin still has his fastball, or does he need to reinvent himself as a head coach to get back to winning like he did for so many years at Penn State?

Drinkwitz Can Turn a Program Around

Perhaps the biggest reason Drinkwitz remains in consideration despite longer odds is his proven ability to get the most out of his program among the titans in the SEC.

Since leaving Appalachian State and taking over the Missouri program in 2020, Drinkwitz has never had a losing record, and the last three years have been the pinnacle of his time. Like the other top candidates, he knows how to build and sustain success.

The Tigers went 13-2 in 2023 with a win over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, and followed up with a 10-3 campaign capped with a win over Iowa in the Music City Bowl.

This year, Mizzou is a solid 6-1 and tied for the second-best record among SEC schools, and looking to stay in the college football playoff mix. While he doesn’t have a College Football Playoff run yet, similar to Kiffin, Missouri is very much in the running this season.

Best Bet for Gators Job

About the best intel we have from the Gators is from the athletic director, Scott Stricklin, who said that the main criteria for the new coach is someone who can be a strong leader and win championships.

With that expectation, it’s hard to put the pulse on the favorite, as Kiffin doesn’t have any college football playoff experience as a head coach, while Franklin has recently been to the big dance with the Nittany Lions.

I don’t think Florida is in a major rush to get things done. The Gators’ year (at 3-4) is already a wash, but with over a month left in the college football regular season, they have some time to really map out who should lead this school forward.
