It’s a matchup that can definitely shake up the Mountain West Saturday night, as the conference-leading San Diego State Aztecs (7-1, 4-0 Mountain West) hit the road to take on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (6-3, 3-2 Mountain West).
SDSU has yet to lose in conference play, and is seeking a seventh straight win overall. The books have them as pretty healthy road favorites in the college football odds.
It’s their rugged defense that should star, and that’s why I’m targeting the total in my San Diego State vs Hawaii prediction below.
Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday night at 11pm ET from Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, a game that’s being broadcast by the Mountain West App, Scripps Sports and the Spectrum Sports Network.
San Diego State vs Hawaii Prediction
The Aztecs are cruising into this one, winning big by putting the vice grips on the opposition.
SDSU is coming off a 24-7 win over Wyoming, which moved them to 4-0 in Mountain West play, where they currently sit in first.
During their 6-game win streak, the Aztecs have won five by at least 17 points, and they’ve held five teams to 10 points or less, including a pair of shutouts.
San Diego State’s defense is elite, holding teams to a scoring average of 10 points per game, which ranks second in college football.
They are 10th in the nation against the run, allowing a microscopic 88.5 yards per game, while limiting opponents to 157.8 yards passing, which is a Top-10 mark in the NCAA.
On offense, they run over the competition, paced by running back Lucky Sutton, who leads the Mountain West in rushing with 820 yards. He’s coming off back-to-back career-high running games.
He rumbled for 158 yards against Wyoming, a week after shredding Fresno State for 131 yards.
The Rainbow Warriors have been lighting up scoreboards for the last four weeks, reeling off a 3-1 record while averaging a robust 39.3 points per game. Even their latest setback had them pouring it on against San Jose State but dropping a 45-38 decision.
They are paced by stud freshman pivot Micah Alejado, who has thrown for 300+ yards in each of the last four games. Alejado has moved Hawaii into the college football’s Top 15 in passing yards at 307.6 per game.
Both teams are playing well and a great pick for bettors, with SDSU going 6-0-0 against the spread in the last six, while the Rainbow Warriors are 4-1-0 ATS over their last five.
San Diego State vs Hawaii: Key Offensive Stats
In this classic matchup of impenetrable defense vs breakaway offense, it’s been San Diego State that’s held the advantage, winning five straight, holding Hawaii to 14 points or less three times.
San Diego State’s defense is one of the few in Mountain West that can slow down Hawaii. Mix in that solid run game, and I predict they can dominate time of posssession, pushing this score Under the total.
- Pick: Under 49.5 points ( -110 at BetMGM)
San Diego State vs Hawaii Odds
The interactive table above will automatically update as the college football odds move over the course of the day.
On November 2, this line was as low as 4.5 points, but has now risen to as high as seven points, though most of the books have settled at SDSU at -6.5.
The moneyline has the Rainbow Warriors at a distant +220, which has lengthened since starting out in the +140 range, while the Aztecs have shortened to an average of -245, though you’ll need to do some searching, as some books have gone as short as -275.
Sportsbooks aren’t underestimating the strength of the Aztecs’ defense: the total was as high as 51.5 points, but has since moved three points to 48.5. Under bettors can still find a total of 49.5 without much issue.
