Four of Conference-USA’s top contenders are duking it out on Tuesday night. According to the C-USA conference odds, Western Kentucky leads the way as the favorite, followed by Kennesaw State (third), Louisiana Tech (fourth), and FIU (fifth).

In the first game, the second-year FBS program Kennesaw State Owls (4-2) takes its undefeated conference record to the 305 to face the FIU Golden Panthers (3-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 21st, at 7 PM ET. Pitbull Stadium in Miami plays host to the conference battle, broadcast on ESPN2.

In the later game, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (5-2) and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (4-2) look to avenge recent conference losses. Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston plays host at 7:30 PM ET for a CBS Sports Network broadcast.

Read below for my Kennesaw State vs FIU and Western Kentucky vs Louisiana Tech predictions.

Kennesaw State vs FIU Predictions

  • FIU +3.5 (-120, FanDuel)

Both Kennesaw State and FIU are coming off big conference wins, propelling them into serious contention to make the C-USA title game.

This game boils down to one matchup: Kennesaw State quarterback Dexter Williams versus FIU’s pass defense. In Kennesaw State’s last game, Williams was spectacular, tossing four touchdowns and throwing for 290 yards. However, he entered play with zero touchdowns (on 53 attempts) with an interception. Which Williams will show up on Tuesday night?

FIU allows a lot of passing yards – the 11th most in FBS – but a decent chunk of the production comes from one of the heaviest run-pass skews in college football. FIU has faced the 10th-fewest rush attempts per game while facing the fourth-most pass attempts per game.

FIU has a 90.7 coverage grade on the season, a top-20 mark in FBS. They were particularly dominant last week, picking off three passes and forcing four other incompletions. The aptly-named Mister Clark had an interception and three other pass deflections. Jessiah McGrew nabbed two interceptions.

In this key battle, I am backing the FIU secondary to turn Dexter Williams back into his early-season form. I expect at least one interception, keeping FIU in the game. I am backing FIU +3.5, at the very least keeping it close with an upstart Kennesaw State squad.

Kennesaw State vs FIU Betting Lines

Spread-3 (-113, BetRivers)+3.5 (-120, FanDuel)
Moneyline-154 (FanDuel)+135 (bet365)
TotalO 49 (-110, Fanatics)U 49.5 (-110, FanDuel)

Kennesaw State is a slight road favorite with the total hovering between 49 and 49.5. Over bettors can take over 49 at Fanatics for -110 odds. Under bettors can get under 49.5 on FanDuel for -110 odds.

Kennesaw State bettors can get the Owls on the spread at -3 on BetRivers (-113 odds) or -154 on the moneyline at FanDuel. For FIU bettors, take the Golden Panthers at +3.5 on FanDuel (-120 odds) or +135 on the moneyline at bet365.

Western Kentucky vs Louisiana Tech Predictions

  • Louisiana Tech -3.5 (-105, ESPNBet)

After back-to-back close road conference wins, the dam burst, and Western Kentucky lost by three scores to FIU last week. Quarterback Maverick McIvor had by far his clunkiest outing of the season, tossing three picks and posting a 31.2 passer rating. While this was an outlier of a poor performance, McIvor has not been lighting up after a red-hot start to the season. He has just two touchdowns with four interceptions in his last four games.

Louisiana Tech enters in a similar state, reeling after a 28-point loss at Kennesaw State in Week 7. The Bulldogs’ usual stingy defense allowed 400 yards and a season-worst 35 points. Louisiana Tech had received a 68.0 or better PFF defensive grade in the first five games of the season before slumping to 55.2 against Kennesaw State.

When Western Kentucky has possession, the key matchup to watch is WKU’s receivers against a sturdy Louisiana Tech coverage unit. The conference’s top receiver, Matthew Henry, had only two catches last week as the Hilltoppers struggled to move the ball. He has averaged 62.1 yards per game this season.

Louisiana Tech’s coverage unit was picked on last week for four touchdowns, but they have a strong resume this season. Safety Jakari Foster leads the conference with three interceptions, three of the 11 total Louisiana Tech has on the season. Cornerback Jhamal Shelby has a whopping eight pass breakups, also leading the conference. Louisiana Tech has three pick-sixes on the season.

When Louisiana Tech has the ball, the prime matchup is Louisiana Tech’s rushing attack versus a shaky WKU front. The Bulldogs have had a relative inability to run the football despite the best efforts of their runners. Louisiana Tech’s top three rushers each average over 3.0 yards after contact per attempt. The offensive line has not been up to the challenge – the unit ranks in the bottom 10 in FBS with a 48.5 run-blocking grade.

Western Kentucky has a bottom-10 run defense by yards allowed per game and yards allowed per attempt. Just in run defense, the Hilltoppers have missed 54 tackles – nearly eight missed tackles per game. Of the 14 players who have played 100 run-defense snaps, 10 have a missed tackle rate above 10%. If there is any week for Louisiana Tech to have success on the ground, this is the week.

With advantages on both sides of the ball, I expect Louisiana Tech to take care of business, covering -3.5 to strengthen its case to win its first-ever C-USA title.
