Team Canada takes to the field for the first time at the World Baseball Classic Saturday morning when they take on team Colombia.
The Colombians had a rough go in their opener, blanked 5-0 against Puerto Rico Friday night. They enter Saturday as +135 underdogs on the moneyline. With a roster of recognizable big leaguers, the Canucks are expected to be battling for top spot in Group A, though anything is possible in a short series with high stakes.
Read below as I break down the Colombia vs Canada matchup, and my best bet.
Colombia vs Canada Picks

Led by captain Josh Naylor, Canada has been pegged with the seventh-best World Baseball Classic odds, and my pick to win in the Colombia vs Canada prediction.
Naylor is coming off a spectacular playoff run for the Seattle Mariners, coming up just short of a trip to the World Series, dropping a Game 7 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
He hit .340 for the playoffs, with three home runs, five RBI and a .967 OPS. He’ll be playing alongside brother Bo, who is a catcher with the Cleveland Guardians.
One of the other familiar faces you’ll see is centrefielder Denzel Clarke, who dazzled with the glove in his rookie year with the Athletics.
Many will also know outfielder Tyler O’Neill, of the Baltimore Orioles, and he comes into the WBC scorching, hitting 7-for-11 in the spring, with a HR and three RBI and an OPS of 1.692.
On the mound, the Canadians will go with righty Michael Soroka of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It hasn’t been a great spring training for him so far, posting a 9.82 ERA in two starts over 3.2 innings.
The wheels came off for Colombia in the fifth inning, as Puerto Rico scored all its runs in the top half of the frame, started with a fielding error by Gio Urshela (of the Minnesota Twins).
From there, a couple of singles, a double and a sac fly later, and the game was essentially settled.
Lefty Adrian Almeida was ripped up in his 1.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs, four hits and walking three. Also, per WBC rules, any reliever throwing at least 30 pitches must sit the next day, so he won’t be available to pitch against Canada.
Fortunately, the Canadians also missed on Colombia’s best pitcher, as veteran Jose Quintana of the Colorado Rockies started Friday.
That means the Colombians will likely turn to starter Julio Teheran Saturday, and if you’re wondering, yes, that’s the same Terheran that pitched his country to a win over Canada in the 2017 WBC. He last pitched in the Majors with the Mets in 2024.
While Colombia has the talent to knock off any team, Canada has good, solid pieces across the field, and should be able to get off on the right foot in San Juan.
