Bond Odds: Daniel Craig Returns for One More
“I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists.”
That was Daniel Craig’s response when asked whether he’ll return as the world’s most infamous secret agent. But the four-time Bond actor has since had a change of heart. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Craig confirmed he will star in James Bond 25, his fifth role in the Bond franchise since taking over in 2005.
Since his debut with Casino Royale, Craig has taken the Bond character and added a touch of darkness to 007. It was a polarizing decision at first, but after showcasing the brooding Bond through Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre, I think most of us can agree that Craig is among the best (if not the best) Bond to date.
According to Craig, he’s only back for one more installment before handing over the role to someone else. Whoever is chosen, the next Bond has some big shoes to fill. Craig took profits to new heights, with Spectre raking in $880 million worldwide and Skyfall earning a whopping $1.1 billion.
Tom Hardy and Jack Huston are the frontrunners to take over, and both would be safe choices. Hardy and Huston both fit the Bond mould but perhaps the franchise is looking to shake things up. There’s a persistent rumor that Idris Elba will be tapped to reinvent the Bond role, or perhaps the franchise will follow in the footsteps of Doctor Who and cast a female actor. However, with so much money at stake, they’ll be hesitant to take too many risks.
Sam Mendes, who directed Skyfall and Spectre, has already declared he will not be returning to lead Bond 25. It’s rumored Christopher Nolan is interested in taking over. As for the musical side, Adele won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and a Golden Globe Award for the theme of Skyfall, and it makes a lot of sense for her to return.
