- The Mountain and The Hound are headed for an epic showdown during season eight on Game of Thrones
- It’s likely that one of the two will meet their end during that showdown
- Who will survive longer during season eight: Gregor or Sandor Clegane
Depending on where you fall in the Game of Thrones fandom, you’re either looking forward to the Clegane Bowl or dreading it.
Either way, it’s happening.
The actors who portray Gregor and Sandor Clegane have hinted ahead of season eight that the estranged brothers will be facing off. While the bet isn’t who wins the Clegane Bowl, we feel pretty safe in saying only one will survive.
GoT Survival Odds: Gregor Clegane vs Sandor Clegane
Who will perish first? | Odds |
---|---|
The Mountain (Gregor Clegane) | -250 |
The Hound (Sandor Clegane) | +170 |
*Odds taken March 23
While Jon Snow vs the Night King is the marquee match-up, this is the heavyweight face-off.
Literally.
We’re talking about two of the strongest human characters in Westeros.
Tale of the Tape: Sandor Clegane vs Gregor Clegane
6’6″ | Height | 8’+ |
240-260 lbs (assumed) | Weight | 420 lbs |
The Hound | Nickname | The Mountain |
Strength | Greatest Attribute | Strength |
Gnarly, fire-induced scar; general crustiness | Known For | Violence; cruelty; being a kind-of-zombie |
One-handed Longsword | Sword | One-handed Broadsword |
While they’re clearly related, The Mountain is so much larger than The Hound. We’d forgive you if you couldn’t see the similarities.
Both have unheard of strength, but Gregor is the stronger of the two. Tales have been told throughout Westeros of how he can chop men in half with one swing.

The Hound’s arc has been more compelling than The Mountain’s. Sandor has seemingly been on a path to redemption.
Gregor? He crushed Oberyn Martell’s skull during Tyrion Lannister’s trial by combat, nearly died, and was revitalized by…questionable measures.

Clegane Bowl has Been Heavily Hinted At
Season seven teased the Clegane Bowl, or at least Gregor’s future.
“It’s not how it ends for you brother. You know who’s coming for you; you’ve always known.” – Sandor to Gregor, S7,EP7

We also have both actors mentioning a showdown as well.
First there was The Mountain on Instagram:
“It happens in season 8…so I can’t speak about it.” – Hafthór Björnsson on Instagram Q/A
And that was followed by The Hound’s interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“There will be a chance of squaring up to his brother and facing those demons.”- Rory McCann to EW

McCann definitely gives off the impression that this means more to the more…human of the two brothers.
Character’s Paths Point to The Hound Winning
The Mountain has been built into a nearly unstoppable character over seven seasons. Even when he was on the brink against Martell, he rolled over, and splattered his brains all over Cersei Lannister.
But this is the end of the road. Whether it’s at the hands of his brother, or the mysterious figure he warned The Mountain about.
There’s no end goal for Gregor; he’s just there to be a brute.
At the point CLEGANEBOWL feels like fanservice but as a fan I’m happy to be serviced. Also I just learned my phone autocorrects CLEGANEBOWL to all caps lol.
Psst also they’re both in King’s Landing 👀 pic.twitter.com/Nysd2NZVgn

The Hound has become a bit of a sympathetic figure since being left for dead. That, and he’s out for vengeance after his brother gave him those scars after shoving him into the fire as kids.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see them both die due to the Clegane Bowl. But The Hound will have the last breath, whether he, or that ominous figure, steals it from The Mountain.
