The 76th Golden Globe Awards takes place next year (2019) on January 6th, with Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg hosting the ceremony.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association will convene at The Beverly Hilton to honor the best of television and film in 2018.

Let’s take a moment to preview the odds for Best Television Musical or Comedy. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel picked up the award last year with its debut season, and is poised to win again with season two. But with such short odds, is there any value in betting on back-to-back awards?

The Favorite

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (-175) had a breakout debut season last year, beating the likes of Black-ish, Master of None, and the rebooted Will & Grace to pick up the Best Television Series Musical or Comedy category at last year’s Golden Globes.

The Amazon series returned this year, with season two dropping earlier this month to similar fanfare and critical acclaim. It’s been a relatively quiet year for television musicals and comedies, making Mrs. Maisel the odds-on betting favorite.

The Underdogs

According to the bookmakers, there are only two other shows with a realistic shot at pinching the Globe. That’s Nexflix’s The Kominsky Method (+300) and HBO’s Barry (+350).

The Kominsky Method is the latest Chuck Lorre project, which should make you a little reluctant to pick it.

The so-called King of Sitcoms has a knack for producing extremely profitable shows, but his record at award shows leaves a lot to be desired.

To find the last time he won best Musical or Comedy, we have to go all the way to 1995 when Cybill claimed the prize. Nonetheless, The Kominsky Method was met with a fairly positive response and is Lorre’s best shot at a Golden Globe in two decades.

Bill Hader’s Barry has mostly slipped under the radar this year, but the award shows have definitely taken note.

Hader won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series at this year’s Emmys, and co-star Henry Winkler won Supporting Actor. The show was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, but lost to season one of Mrs. Maisel.

NBC’s The Good Place (+1800) and Showtime’s Kidding (+2000) are the long-odds contenders for the award.

Mrs. Maisel makes a strong case as the favorite to pick up the award, but at +1800 odds, the value is with The Good Place.

The Good Place entered its third season this year and picked up the Outstanding Achievement in Comedy award at the TCAs. Kidding, starring Jim Carrey, was released to little acclaim and wouldn’t have received a nod in a stronger year.

The Value Pick

There seems to be a ton of value in The Good Place (+1800).

The Television Critics Association picked it for Best Comedy over Mrs. Maisel and Barry this year, and while the TCA isn’t always an accurate bellwether for the Globes, it shows that the series is finally gaining traction on the red carpet.

The show has consistently garnered glowing reviews, and season three currently holds a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mrs. Maisel makes a strong case as the favorite to pick up the award, but at +1800 odds, the value is with The Good Place.
