  • The 2019 Golden Globe nominees were announced on Dec. 6, 2018
  • Sportsbooks have posted early odds for the biggest categories
  • A Star Is Born is the prohibitive favorite to win Best Motion Picture (Drama), despite it being more of a musical

The 76th annual Golden Globe Awards take place on Jan. 6th, 2019, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The nominations came out on Thursday and, as usual, there are some confusing elements.

First and foremost, the very musical A Star Is Born submitted in the Best Drama category.

But now is not the time to get into the idiosyncrasies of the Hollywood Foreign Press. Now is the time to scrutinize the early odds for the three biggest categories.

Below, find the opening odds from online sportsbooks in Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Best TV Series (Drama), along with our early betting advice.

2019 Golden Globe Odds

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Favorites to win Best Motion Picture – Drama Odds  (Dec. 7)
A Star Is Born -400
If Beale Street Could Talk +400
BlacKkKlansman +750
Black Panther +1200
Bohemian Rhapsody +1600

Betting Advice: Even though A Star Is Born probably belongs in the next category, it’s still going to win Best Drama. It’s already a 1/1 favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar, and its main contender there is Roma, a Mexican film by Alfonso Cuaron which isn’t eligible for the Best Drama GG.

Betting on any other film here is a donation to your local sportsbook.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Favorites to win Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Odds  (Dec. 7)
Green Book +175
The Favourite +175
Vice +200
Mary Poppins Returns +900
Crazy Rich Asians +1000

Betting Advice: Vice, which garnered the most nominations (6), isn’t out until Christmas and the dark satire is an awkward fit in the Best Comedy category. But there’s value on it here at +200 given the subject matter (George W. Bush’s selection of Dick Cheney as his running mate) and the GG’s voting body (foreign journalists), a group that loves to see a certain element of the American political spectrum get its comeuppance.

Best TV Series – Drama

Favorites to win Best TV Series – Drama Odds (Dec. 7)
Killing Eve -150
Homecoming +325
Pose +550
The Americans +600
Bodyguard +750

Betting Advice: This is a weak year for Best TV Drama. Note that favorite Killing Eve stars Sandra Oh, who is co-hosting the awards show with Andy Samberg. The GG’s have a well-known “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” history.

The best advice we can offer at this point, though, is to fade The Americans, which has been running since 2013 but never even received a nomination until this year.

Each of the last four winners (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown, Mr. Robot, and The Affair) won after their first season. The Americans is the only nominee that doesn’t fit that description this year.
