The Duke and Duchess of Sussex famously left the United Kingdom in early 2020, stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family. Now, over a year later, they’ve revealed why.

Throughout the Oprah interview, Markle alluded to rumblings within the Royal Family’s institution, citing lack of support and notions of racism within the family. She also mentioned the British press being a major reason for wanting to break off from the Royal family.

Amidst Harry and Meghan’s departure from the Royal Family, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth announced on January 18, 2020, that Harry and Meghan would no longer use the prefix of His and Her Royal Highness.

Buckingham Palace stated, “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.” Later, BBC royal correspondent Daniela Relph told BBC Radio 5 Live, “When they first issued that statement about what they wanted, they talked about forging this progressive role within the Royal Family, about stepping back from royal duties. This isn’t stepping back, it’s stepping away entirely.”

Clearly, the monarchy as an institution already stated its stance on Harry and Meghan’s royal status. This was done and dusted long before the Oprah interview.

With Harry and Meghan’s new revelations now in the public light, they’ve worsened their relations with the Royal Family. It’s hard to imagine having them tell their truth is going to improve the relationship.

To become HRH again, the couple would have to step back into a role with the Royal Family. After hearing what they told Oprah, it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.

While Meghan and Harry aren’t presently using the titles of His and Her Royal Highness, they are still entitled to presently go by Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Duke and Duchess are titles Queen Elizabeth bestowed on the couple on their public wedding day, May 19, 2018. Even after they fled the UK and have started a new life in the US, the titles are still in effect.

Although, Meghan and Harry don’t necessarily lead with these titles. They were simply credited on the Oprah special as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, without the Sussex titles.

But after their intimate revelations about Royal life, will being dubbed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex be subsequently stripped from them?

The key player here is Queen Elizabeth. Despite the statements, the couple made on the Oprah special, Harry and Meghan both had nothing but flattering and glowing remarks about the Queen herself.

In an official Buckingham Palace statement, the Queen has revealed the allegations of racism and revelations that Meghan and Harry felt trapped are being taken seriously.

It sounds like their relationship with Queen Elizabeth is still in good standing. Meghan and Harry revealed they had a Zoom chat with the Queen so she can have a chance to see her great-grandson, Archie. The Queen is more likely to leave the Duke and Duchess titles standing.
