Three-time PGA Tour champion Russell Henley is known to get hot and play really well but is also prone to stretches of inconsistency. Following a bogey-free, 5-under 67 on moving day, Henley has positioned himself for his first victory since the 2017 Houston Open.

Henley did not find himself as one of the pre-tournament favorites to lift the trophy come Sunday, but he will begin the final round three ahead of Xander Schauffele, Jason Kokrak, Talor Gooch and Lanto Griffin.

There are a host of major champions inside the top-10 who are lurking that could snatch away the title from Henley should he falter in the final round, including Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson. Henley Putting On A Short Game Clinic

It would obviously stand to reason the leader of a golf tournament was striking the ball well, which Russell Henley has been doing, where he’s ranked eleventh in strokes gained: tee-to-green. Normally that number would be higher for a player leading by three, however.

Where he’s been picking up his shots has been on the greens, as he’s first in SG: putting this week, gaining over seven strokes on the field. Henley is also first in scrambling as well, getting it up and down 86% of the time at Shadow Creek, which has contributed to him only bogeying two holes all tournament.

I don’t love his +165 odds to take home the title, since they’re so low. If there’s a player I’d rather invest in, it would be Xander Schauffele, who surprisingly let his 36-hole three shot edge on the field slip away with a 2-over, 74.

All four of Schauffele’s PGA Tour victories have featured him chasing the leader entering the final day, and Schauffele has the most pedigree of the three other golfers who he’s tied with for second place.

Schauffele was fifth in his last start at the US Open and would’ve won the Tour Championship had everyone started at the same score at the beginning of the event. His +340 odds are more appealing than Henley, who has the 54-hole lead for just the third time in his career.

1. Justin Thomas (+1000): Though he starts the final day five shots back, the former world #1 has been clawing back following an opening round of 72, shooting 10-under-par the last two days. Hit 30 of 36 greens during Friday and Saturday. Fourth in SG: tee-to-green this week.
2. Lanto Griffin (+1200): Part of the pack in a tie for second, Griffin is third in putting and scrambling this week plus he’s sixth in strokes gained approaching the green, which should give him many birdie looks on Sunday. Has one PGA Tour victory to his credit as opposed to Jason Kokrak and Talor Gooch, who are tied with Griffin and both remain winless.
3. Tyrrell Hatton (+1600): Won just last week at the European Tour’s prestigious BMW PGA Championship. First in strokes gained approaching the green through three rounds. The first round leader has hit at least 13 greens in all three days.
