  • The 2021-22 PGA Tour season begins at the Fortinet Championship from Napa, CA, starting Thursday, September 16th
  • Jon Rahm is the heavy +300 favorite at Silverado Country Club over Webb Simpson
  • We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious and provided the best value bets below

If you blinked you may have missed the extremely short PGA Tour off-season, as there was just a one week break following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Jon Rahm, who finished second in his quest to nab his first career FedEx Cup title, is competing this week and is the overwhelming favorite to win.

This tournament has a different title sponsor in Fortinet, but the old Safeway Open is still being contested at Silverado Country Club in the heart of wine country in Napa, California. Most of the top golfers have elected to pass on competing, with Rahm the only Ryder Cup member teeing it up. Rahm is joined, however, by two other major champions this season in Hideki Matsuyama and Phil Mickelson.

This will be the first of 48 official PGA Tour events for the campaign, and the early season tournaments are key to setting up the rest of the schedule, especially for younger golfers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, last year 47-year-old Stewart Cink won here for the first time since his 2009 Open Championship triumph.

Sebastian Munoz Sports Intriguing Value

Sebastian Munoz has been making a name for himself more regularly on the PGA Tour following his first title at the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship. In five of his last six events, the Colombian has been inside the top-30, including a pair of T-4 results. One of those came at the Olympic competition, where he was defeated in a supersized playoff for the bronze medal.

He had two solid showings in the FedEx Cup playoff events, showing his game is trending upwards. In his last 24 rounds, Munoz has put up impressive ‘strokes gained’ numbers.

Even though Jon Rahm is clearly head and shoulders above his competitors, it’s really hard to pull the trigger on such low +300 odds to win outright. Munoz, however, sits at +5000 which is much more palatable and he’s been close recently at adding to his trophy case.

2021 Fortinet Championship Best Value Picks

  1. Max Homa (+6500): Max Homa had a solid previous season, winning at Riviera for his second title and he also had four other top-10’s. While he hasn’t been contending of late, he’s made five straight cuts so his game isn’t that far off. Against a weaker field, these odds are enticing for a player that was regularly on leaderboards for a good chunk of 2021.
  2. Brendan Steele (+10000): Though he doesn’t come into this week in fine form, Brendan Steele has had plenty of success at this track. He won it in back-to-back years in 2016 and 2017, and has never missed a cut in the five times they’ve played this course. Second in total strokes gained the last 24 rounds at this venue.
  3. Doc Redman (+15000): Doc Redman is an extremely streaky golfer, thus why his odds are so long. He had four top-10’s last season, including three top-four finishes. One of those came here at Silverado, where he wound up tied for third. He’s been on the cusp of a breakthrough victory, and though his game isn’t as sharp lately, he’s prone to popping up on leaderboards out of nowhere.
