Golf is an absolutely fickle game that is increasingly difficult to comprehend week in and week out. The Palmetto Championship is a prime example of that, as Tain Lee, the 1,882nd ranked golfer in the world led midway through Saturday over world number one Dustin Johnson. Lee ended up falling off with three straight bogeys, and that’s where 36 hole leader Chesson Hadley took control. He now leads by four shots on his nearest competitor, but he had shown no form coming into this week, missing ten of his last twelve cuts.

Johnson was the favorite to win the tournament entering the championship against a weak field, but on moving day he’s moved back, dropping one stroke to par, and he finds himself six back.

He is far from out of it, however, since Hadley has just one PGA Tour triumph, and that came way back in 2014. Play was suspended with one hole to play and four golfers on the course due to the thunderstorms. Read on to see the updated odds at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree heading into Sunday’s final round.

Hadley Holds Healthy Lead

Even the most die hard fans of Chesson Hadley couldn’t have expected this quick turnaround in South Carolina following a miserable lengthy stretch of tournaments. He holds a four shot edge, however, and he’s doing it behind the strength of four birdies on the back nine holes Saturday. He’s been dynamite on the dance floor, gaining over nine strokes on the field this week, ranking first.

Considering Hadley is ahead by four shots, his odds to win outright are actually still palpable at -125. He hasn’t contended to win an event in a very long time, however, so expecting him to breeze through to the finish line can’t be expected. He’s missed ten of those last twelve cuts, so wagering on him to get it done is dicey.

However, how many other golfers can be ahead by so much, and still have near even money odds to win? It wouldn’t hurt to have faith in Hadley, since he’s six shots up on third place. Should be stumble, a plethora of golfers are ready to pounce.

2021 Palmetto Championship Best Live Value Picks

  1. Dustin Johnson (+600): Despite being six shots back, Dustin Johnson absolutely is still in the mix for this championship, and by far has the most pedigree of anyone on the board. Fifth in putts per green in regulation and seventh in strokes gained tee-to-green through three days. Playing in his home state, he’s got the crowd firmly in his corner, and he still looms large despite being well back.
  2. Tyrrell Hatton (+2000): 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational champion Tyrrell Hatton has quietly moved up the board, and tied for the second best round Saturday with a 4-under, 67, which included three eagles. First in strokes gained tee-to-green through three days, Despite winning just once in the USA, like Hadley, he’s no stranger to the winner’s circle with six European Tour titles.
