One year after coming oh-so-close to tasting victory at the Sony Open, Brendan Steele is yet again in the driver’s seat to earn a victory. Steele shot a blistering nine-under, 61 on moving day to jump into sole possession of the lead despite not being one of the favorites to begin the week. He’s out to avenge last year’s loss, where he couldn’t convert the 54-hole lead before losing in a playoff to Cameron Smith.

One of our under the radar picks to consider this week was Joaquin Niemann after he lost in a playoff last Sunday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and he has not disappointed. He’s in a tie for second with Kevin Na, just two strokes behind Steele.

Read on to see the updated odds and the best bets to make for Sunday’s final round.

Brendan Steele Out To Avenge 2020 Loss

Without a doubt Brendan Steele should’ve won this golf tournament last year, as he held a three shot edge entering the final round. It feels like deja vu all over again as he shot a career low round of 61 on moving day to jump out in front of the pack at the Sony Open.

Steele is not exactly known as a closer on the PGA Tour, though he does have three titles to his credit, the last being the Safeway Open in 2017. Just because he has a two shot edge does not mean this tournament is over by any means, as last year proved. His +340 odds aren’t palpable enough to wager on considering he rarely turns leads into victories.

Last Five Sony Open Winners

Year Winner
2020 Cameron Smith (-11) Playoff
2019 Matt Kuchar (-22)
2018 Patton Kizzire (-17) Playoff
2017 Justin Thomas (-27)
2016 Fabian Gomez (-20) Playoff

A player like Joaquin Niemann, who was in a playoff last week at the Sentry Tournament of Champions is much more enticing at +430 because of his otherworldly talents and he can be aggressive, starting two strokes behind. Even though he’s trailing Steele, Niemann is primed to win his second of what surely will be many PGA Tour events in his career.

Best Live Value Picks for Sony Open

  1. Russell Henley (+1200): The 2013 winner of this event, Russell Henley is knocking on the door, just three shots back. Each day he’s been even better giving himself birdie looks, hitting 14 greens on Thursday, then 15 on Friday, followed by 16 on Saturday. The only player within five shots of the lead to earn a victory at Waialae Country Club.
  2. Keith Mitchell (+3300): Just four shots back of Brendan Steele, Keith Mitchell has an earlier tee time which will allow him to be aggressive to go low. On moving day, Steele and Na both shot 9-under, 61, so a player like Mitchell could post a great score Sunday and wait to see how the leaders do behind him. The 2019 Honda Classic champion, Mitchell isn’t afraid of the moment, having beaten Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler down the stretch of that tournament. The last two rounds he’s gained over seven strokes on the field on the greens.
