When it comes to The Players Championship, you have to embrace the variance. TPC Sawgrass is one of the most volatile venues on the PGA Tour, with water lurking absolutely everywhere.

To make matters worse, word on the course this week is the rough is extra long, which is going to make playing from off the fairway and around the green extremely challenging.

That should entice you to make strong iron play a top consideration when choosing which golfers you want to back, and players with poor ball striking form should be targeted to miss the cut.

Fade Matsuyama

Matsuyama has a track record of being a great iron player, but that skillset has failed him recently. He’s fresh off back-to-back missed cuts, and lost 4.7 strokes on approach the last time he made a weekend in Phoenix.

Over the past 12 rounds, Matsuyama ranks 90th in strokes gained approach and 87th in fairways gained. If he sprays it like that this week, he’s going to be in all sorts of trouble.

If the recent ball striking concerns weren’t enough to encourage a fade, consider this: Matsuyama has been reportedly dealing with a neck injury which helps explain his poor play. The injury is still nagging him this week, and it’s not like he’s had a ton of recent success at TPC Sawgrass.

He’s trunk slammed in two of his past three appearances, including the last time he showed up in 2021.

Pick: Hideki Matsuyama Missed Cut (+120)

The Players Championship Make the Cut Parlay

We may down on Matsuyama to make the weekend, but there’s plenty of golfers we like to get through the cut line. The list starts with Shane Lowry, who’s the first leg of our make the cut parlay.

Lowry ranks 11th in the field in strokes gained approach over the last 50 rounds, and dominates at Pete Dye courses, including TPC Sawgrass. No player in the field has gained more strokes on Dye tracks over the last 24 rounds than Lowry.

Number two on the list of Pete Dye track crushers is Corey Conners, who’s made seven straight cuts. He’s gained at least 3 strokes on approach in three of those starts, and has positive ball striking numbers in all but one of those outings. He’ll be our second leg, while Chris Kirk will be our third.

Kirk won two weeks ago at the Honda Classic, and has three top-fives in his last five starts. Next up on our parlay is Sahith Theegala, who is a cut making machine. Theegala has made the weekend in 15 of his past 16 tournaments. His form is incredible, racking up three top-14’s in four starts, gaining a combined 8.7 strokes on approach over the last two weeks alone.

We’ll round out our make the cut parlay with Si Woo Kim, a former champion of this event. Like Lowry and Conners, Kim excels on Pete Dry tracks, winning not only here but also at PGA West.

He has the reputation of a volatile player, but we might be able to put that to bed. Kim has made 13 of his past 14 cuts, and has found the weekend five times in seven trips to The Players Championship.

Pick: Make the Cut Parlay (+500)
