The third major championship of the season heads to Los Angeles for the US Open. The golf course is Los Angeles Country Club, which is hosting a major for the first time ever. The first two major winners this season were Jon Rahm at the Masters and Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship. However, the 2023 PLAYERS Champion, Scottie Scheffler, is the +700 favorite to win outright in the US Open odds.

The field features 156 players, and the defending champion is Matt Fitzpatrick, who defeated Scheffler and Will Zalatoris by a stroke in 2022. Read on for first-round leader odds and analysis.

2023 US Open First-Round Leader Odds

Matt Fitzpatrick +4000 1:32pm
Justin Thomas +4500 7:40am
Dustin Johnson +4500 1:32pm

The forecast calls for it to be cloudy in the morning with a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the mid 60’s, reaching 70 degrees for the second wave of players. There will barely be a breath of wind, ranging between 1-5 MPH for the duration of Thursday.

A benefit for those teeing it up in the morning is the exact same as it is every week – less-bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up.

Xander Schauffele Loves US Open

Xander Schauffele (8:24am tee time) has saved his best golf in the major championships for the US Open. In his career, he’s never finished worse than T-14th in six attempts, racking up five top-7s in the process. He’s also strong on Thursday’s, ranking seventh on the campaign in scoring average (69.23).

Xander Schauffele’s Strokes Gained Stats: Last 24 Rounds

Total Putting Short Game Tee-To-Green Approach Ball Striking
3 8 9 16 17 22

His last start was his ‘worst’ showing in his last eight tournaments, where he finished T-24th. For the season, the X-Man ranks fourth in total strokes gained, and sixth approaching the green, which should give him plenty of birdie looks.

Pick: Xander Schauffele (+3500)

Justin Rose With Consistent Season

Justin Rose (8:02am) fits the bill perfectly for a golfer in the mid-tier numbers to grab ahold of the lead after 18 holes. He got back into the winners circle at Pebble Beach this year, and he has top-20s in five of the last seven times teeing it up (the other two were T-25th and T-36th). In six of his last seven tourneys, he’s opened up with a round in the 60’s, as he ranks eleventh in Thursday scoring on the campaign.

PGA Tour First Round Scoring Average Leaders This Season

Golfer Average Score Odds
1. Scottie Scheffler 68.13 +1800
2. Jon Rahm 68.38 +2200
3. Viktor Hovland 68.47 +3000
4. Adam Scott 68.55 +6500
6. Max Homa 69.21 +4000
7. Xander Schauffele 69.23 +3500
11. Justin Rose 69.33 +4500
14. Si Woo Kim 69.47 +6000
16. Sungjae Im 69.61 +5500
17. Andrew Putnam 69.62 +13000

He’s twelfth in total strokes gained on the season, and in his last twelve rounds, the 2013 US Open champ is second in SG: approach, fifth tee-to-green, and seventh in total strokes gained.

Pick: Justin Rose (+4500)

Wyndham Clark An Intriguing Longshot

Wyndham Clark (1:10pm) won for the first time on the PGA Tour just three starts ago at the Wells Fargo Championship. He’s been playing some solid golf all season, making the cut in 17 of his last 18 tournaments.

In his last twelve rounds, Clark is second in SG: short game, third in putting and fifth in total strokes gained. He’s inside the top-ten in approaching the green, and a top-20 player tee-to-green and ball striking. He also is a very respectable 31st in first-round scoring on the campaign. Add it all up, and Clark is a very viable longshot.

Pick: Wyndham Clark (+6500)
