21-year-old sensation Matthew Wolff continues to defy the odds at Winged Foot Golf Club with a sizzling 5-under, 65 on moving day to open up a two shot edge.
Despite hitting only two fairways on Saturday, Wolff tied the low round of the championship and is in position to win his first major in his very first US Open. Should he stumble, there are a slew of top tier talented players and major champions ready to pounce.
Wolff entered the week as a relative long shot with +6500 odds to win the title, but he put on a dazzling display to match Hale Irwin for the lowest 54-hole total at this course at a US Open.

Wolff Looking to Win In First US Open
It really is remarkable that Matthew Wolff was able to shoot such a blistering score given the fact he hit just two of the 14 fairways on Saturday.
Winged Foot is notorious for it’s lush rough which is supposed to be penal, but Wolff has shown the ability to extricate shots out of it.
Scoring average today is 73.63. Matthew Wolff beat it by 8.63.

For the week, he’s hit just 12 of 42 fairways, which is eight less than any third round leader since 1983. In theory that will catch up to him as the pressure is ratcheted up on Sunday afternoon.
He’s been able to save strokes with his excellent approach game, ranking fourth in the tournament. His putting and short game have been magical, where he’s had the second fewest putts and he’s second in SG: around the green this week.

This is also just the second ever major he’s played, having finished T-4th last month at the PGA Championship. Normally you’d expect a young kid to melt down under the crushing weight of expectations and pressure, but Collin Morikawa shattered that narrative at the PGA.
Given that Wolff has been missing so many fairways, however, his +150 price is just not appealing enough for a player who’s won just one PGA Tour event thus far in his young career.
Bryson Battling Back
Bryson DeChambeau looked like he might tumble way down the leaderboard early in his round, making bogeys in his first two holes Saturday. DeChambeau had a phenomenal comeback, however, posting three birdies against just one more dropped shot the rest of the way.

He finished in the same position as Wolff in last month’s PGA for his first career top ten in a major. This week, DeChambeau is ranked second off the tee, gaining over four strokes on the field. He’s followed that up with being eleventh approaching the green, and has been solid with his short game.
Bryson DeChambeau could become the third player to win a U.S. Amateur, NCAA Championship and U.S. Open.

Despite trailing Wolff by two shots, I’d be more comfortable trusting in Bryson in yet another chapter of the Wolff-DeChambeau rivalry. Last year, Wolff eagled on top of DeChambeau on the 72nd hole to win the 3M Open. Then this season, DeChambeau returned the favor with a victory against him at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and he’s the safer bet for history to repeat itself Sunday.

- Xander Schauffele (+1000): He was one of our pre-tournament picks so why change now? All four of his PGA Tour titles have been when he trailed entering the final day. Fifth in SG with his short game and eighth in putting. Has posted T-3, T-5, T-6 finishes in three career Opens.
- Rory McIlroy (+1400): Quietly in 7th place after three days, McIlroy is battling for his first major since 2014. The Ulsterman is first in SG: off the tee this week and is T-3rd in fairways hit. Solid stats across the board with McIlroy T-6th for greens in regulation.
- Webb Simpson (+10000): Long shot with potentially big upside. The 2012 US Open champ, Simmpson finds himself eight back so he’ll need a huge final round. Last season, Webb was tops in final round scoring average on tour. Fourth in SG: putting this week. Saturday Simpson was tops with strokes gained with his short game which bodes well for Sunday.
