  • The St. Leger will be run July 27th at Caymanas Racetrack
  • Supreme Soul has won the first two legs of the Jamaican Triple Crown
  • Is there value on betting on Supreme Soul to become the 8th Triple Crown Winner?

There has not been a Jamaican Triple Crown winner since Mark My Words in 2010, and just two in the last 22 years. Supreme Soul won the 2000 Guineas by two lengths in April, the Jamaica Derby by the same distance last weekend, and will be the heavy favorite in the St. Leger at the end of this month.

So what’s the call? Should you bet on Supreme Soul to earn the Triple Crown title, or against him? Let’s look at the updated odds.

Supreme Soul

The success of Supreme Soul has come as no surprise. He was 7/5 when winning the 2000 Guineas, and 1/5 in the Jamaica Derby. Both races were relatively easy victories.

Supreme Soul’s breeding is interesting. While father Soul Warrior had an unspectacular career, winning four times in 18 races including the West Virginia Derby, mother Beware Baby was two for two, and had her racing career derailed by injury.

Supreme Soul has just one career loss. He finished second to Run Thatcher Run in December. Supreme Soul turned the tables on that rival in the 2000 Guineas.

Competition

While it is not perfectly clear yet which specific horses will run against Supreme Soul in the St. Leger, there are a few viable options.

Run Thatcher Run was impressive last year, but has not shown an ability to run well at great distances.

Run Thatcher Run was impressive last year, but has not shown an ability to run well at great distances. He is a classy horse, but ran out of gas in 2000 Guineas at short odds.

Sentient finished third at the 2000 Guineas, and was runner up in the Jamaican Derby. That would make him among the top contenders, however, even when getting a 16 pound weight allowance in the Governor’s Cup, he came up short.

The Bet

Supreme Soul’s -400 odds give the horse an 80% chance of winning. Though that is a very high number, his competition has not shown an ability to closely compete. Crazy things happen in horse racing, and there are no locks, but he went off at even lower odds in the Derby, and proved he is a deserving gigantic favorite.

Pick: Yes (-400)
