Jersey Retirement Odds – Whose Numbers Will Reach the Rafters?

The New York Yankees recently announced that they would retire the numbers of three legendary Pinstripers: pitcher Andy Pettitte (No. 46), center fielder Bernie Williams (No. 51), and catcher Jorge Posada (No. 20).

The trio will be the 18th, 19th, and 20th Yankees to have their numbers retired by the organization. (New York better be careful or it won’t have enough numbers left for its active roster.)

That news got us thinking: what are the odds that other stars – past and present – will see their numbers set aside? Since no one else has addressed the issue, it’s once again up to us!

We could just stick to the Yankees, but that would be boring. We could just stick to baseball, but that would be lazy. So, instead, we set the odds for players from all the major North American sports: NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL.

It was a daunting task we took on – and one that doesn’t have a set formula – but, by looking at a multitude of stats and teams’ proclivities for retiring numbers, we’ve come up with some odds.

Since we’ve focused on great players from each sport, there are a lot of shoe-ins in the list below (which is organized, first, by sport and, second, by likelihood). But feel free to drop a name or two in the comments and we’ll try to come up with some figures.
