Baseball’s best team keeps getting better. The San Francisco Giants strolled into Wrigley Field this past weekend and promptly swept the Chicago Cubs, running their win streak to seven games in the process.

The Giants will look to make it eight in a row on Monday (September 13th), as they host the rival San Diego Padres.

Padres vs Giants Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
San Diego Padres -106 -1.5 (+158) O 8.5 (-104)
San Francisco Giants -110 +1.5 (-192) U 8.5 (-118)

Odds as of  September 12th at DraftKings.

San Francisco opened as -110 moneyline favorites, in a game that features a total of 8.5. First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 pm ET at Oracle Park, with clouds and 66 degree temperatures in the forecast.

Probable Pitchers

Thanks to an elbow injury to Johnny Cueto, and a positive Coronavirus test for Alex Wood, the Giants are left without a starter to trot out on Monday. As a result, the team will throw a bullpen game with right-hander Dominic Leone expected to be up first.

The right-hander has filled this role twice this season, with both “starts” coming in the last week. Leone threw two shutout innings on Friday against the Cubs, and a single scoreless inning last Sunday against the Dodgers.

Leone hasn’t allowed an earned run over his past five outings, and sports a tidy 1.48 ERA and 1.05 WHIP this season. The Giants bullpen as a unit leads MLB in ERA, and ranks top eight in WAR and strand rate.

San Diego’s bats have been ice cold recently, and are fresh off being shutout twice in the past three days. They were outscored 14-4 by the LA Dodgers over the weekend, and have been blanked three times in their past five contests.

Darvish vs Giants Bullpen

Yu Darvish
VS
Giants Bullpen
8-9 Record 38-20
3.95 ERA 3.06
1.05 WHIP 1.09
.222 OBA .209
5.3 SO/W Ratio 2.9

The Padres meanwhile, will counter with Yu Darvish, as they look to snap a three-game losing streak. The 35-year-old is on pace for his worst full season as a starter, despite posting respectable advanced metrics. His 3.66 xFIP and 10.73 K/9 rate are in line with his career averages, while his hard hit allowed rate is actually lower than his average over nine seasons.

He endured a brutal stretch between July and the first week of September, but rebounded nicely is his last outing. Facing the LA Angels on Wednesday, he surrendered just three hits and one run, while striking out seven.

Prior to that start, he yielded at least four runs in three straight outings, and in seven of his past nine appearances. He’s made two starts against San Fran in 2021, and both were outstanding efforts. He’s 1-0 against MLB’s top club, with a 1.46 ERA and a 19-4 strikeout-to-walk rate over 12.1 innings.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Padres Batters Batting Average vs Giants Giants Batters Batting Average vs Darvish
Austin Nola .000 Brandon Belt .111
Eric Hosmer .324 Kris Bryant .000
Adam Frazier .323 Brandon Crawford .300
Manny Machado .200 Evan Longoria .154

Trent Grisham .333 Wilmer Flores .000
Fernando Tatis Jr. .200 Mike Yastrzemski .333
Tommy Pham .238 Tommy La Stella .200

The Giants lineup has been ret-hot lately, scoring at least six runs in each of the seven games during their winning streak. They’ve crossed the plate 12 or more times on three occasions during that stretch, and outscored the Cubs 27-10 over the weekend.

Padres vs Giants Pick

These two teams will meet 10 times in the next month starting with a four-game set this week. San Fran owns a 5-4 series advantage in 2021, with seven of the nine contests producing eight runs or less.

Given the strength of the Giants bullpen, combined with the Padres offensive struggles and Darvish toeing the rubber, it makes sense to target another low scoring contest.

Pick: Under 8.5 (-118)
