The Seattle Mariners came up short on Friday versus the Los Angeles Angels and now will need major help if they want to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2001.
Seattle enters play on Saturday (October 2nd) in Game 2 of their series with LA, one game back of Boston for the final Wild Card spot with just two games to play.

Probable Pitchers
Seattle will give the ball to Chris Flexen, who’ll be looking to shake off a rough start versus Oakland. The former KBO star allowed seven hits and four runs against the A’s on Monday, but was bailed out by his lineup. The M’s gave Flexen 13 runs of support, allowing him to pick up his third straight win.
In his previous two starts, he was lights out, holding both Oakland and Kansas City to one run a piece. He’s 2-0 in three starts versus LA this season, posting a 2.00 ERA, while yielding a .203 opponent batting average.

Flexen has pitched better at home than on the road this season, posing a 3.31 ERA (vs 4.06 on the road), surrendering only six home runs in over 92 innings of work.
Diaz vs Flexen
1-0 | Record | 14-6 |
3.12 | ERA | 3.67 |
1.15 | WHIP | 1.25 |
.167 | OBA | .268 |
1.2 | SO/W Ratio | 3.2 |
The Angels will counter with Jhonathan Diaz, who’ll be making just his second career start. The rookie’s MLB debut lasted just 1.2 innings two weeks ago versus Oakland, but he rebounded the following week in a relief appearance against Seattle.
Diaz picked up Jamie Barria, who left after 2 innings due to shoulder tightness, by pitching 7 innings of one-run ball. The 25-year-old struck out four Mariners along the way, and coughed up only three hits.
Diaz was not an elite prospect by any means, and doesn’t feature overpowering stuff. His fastball tops out around 90 mph and he’s posted a K/9 rate below 9.0 in seven of his eight minor league stops.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Mariners Batters | Batting Average vs Diaz | Angels Batters | Batting Average vs Flexen |
---|---|---|---|
J.P Crawford | .000 | David Fletcher | .375 |
Mitch Haniger | .333 | Phil Gosselin | .200 |
Jake Fraley | .000 | Juan Lagares | .400 |
Dylan Moore | .000 | Max Stassi | .400 |
Ty France | .000 | Shohei Ohtani | .143 |
Kyle Seager | .000 | Jared Walsh | .143 |
Abraham Toro | .000 | Kurt Suzuki | .000 |
His 5.69 xFIP suggests he’s due for some regression after that outing against Seattle, and it could happen on Saturday the way the M’s are swinging the bat.
Angels vs Mariners Pick
Seattle has won 10 of its past 12, outscoring its opposition by 19 runs over that stretch.

They need to win to keep their now slim playoff hopes alive, and will pull out all the stops to ensure victory.
LA meanwhile, has just four wins in its past 14 overall, and has struggled against right-handers all season (.244 BA / .307 OBP / .400 SLG). Flexen clearly has their number, and we should expect another solid outing from him with the Mariners season on the line.
Seattle is 10-7 against the Angels this season, with eight of those victories coming by at least two runs.
Pick: Seattle Mariners -1.5 (+120)
