  • The New York Yankees are heavy home favorites over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night
  • Gerrit Cole (10-6, 3.11) returns to action for the Pinstripes, while the Halos start José Suarez (5-5, 3.90)
  • The odds and pitching matchups can be found below with a prediction

The New York Yankees welcome back ace Gerrit Cole from the COVID list — and try to stay in the hunt in the American League Wild Card standings — when they host the Los Angeles Angels at 7:05 pm ET Monday in a makeup game from rain-delayed tilt earlier this season at Yankee Stadium.

The Halos have dropped four of six coming into the matchup and have either lost or split three straight series. The Yankees, meanwhile, have won six straight series and enter Monday’s affair only 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot in the AL standings.

The Angels took two of the first three games of the scheduled four-game set seven weeks ago in the Bronx. But the Orange County native’s return Monday makes the home team favorites in this spot.

Angels vs Yankees Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Los Angeles Angels +210 +1.5 (+110) Over 8.5 (-115)
New York Yankees -260 -1.5 (-130) Under 8.5 (-105)

Odds as of August 15h at DraftKings.

As soon as Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Cole would return in this game Sunday morning, New York opened as a -240 favorite and that number has lengthened as we draw closer to first pitch.

Probable Pitchers

On the mound, the Angels’ José Suarez (5-5, 3.90) faces New York’s Gerrit Cole (10-6, 3.11).

The headliner here is obviously Cole’s return to action for the first time since July 29th. Shortly after that last start against the Rays — where he went 5.1 innings, allowed six hits, seven earned runs, two walks and struck out ten in a 14-0 loss to Tampa Bay, he tested positive for the coronavirus. As a result, he’s missed the last two turns in the rotation. Cole has started 21 games in 2021, 14 of which have been of the quality vintage. But his previous two starts have been uncharacteristically shaky, going 0-2 with a particularly ugly 8.91 ERA.

Suarez vs Cole Key Stats

José Suarez
VS
Gerrit Cole
5-5 Record 10-6
3.90 ERA 3.11
4.01 xERA 2.95
1.25 WHIP 0.99
2.45 SO/W 6.29

Boone is hoping for recovered and rejuvenated Cole Monday when he faces his hometown club. The nearly 31-year-old right-hander owns a 6-1 career mark against the Angels and a 2.70 ERA in nine career starts.

As for the four-time All-Star’s performances this season, Cole is 6-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 11 home starts. In 13 night game starts, he has a 9-2 record and 1.88 ERA.

As for Suarez, the 23-year-old Venezuelan has not recorded any quality starts this season, but has gone into the fifth inning in four of his last five outings. He’s gone 2-3 with a 4.69 ERA in that stretch, while the Nats have a 2-3 record in those five games.

Meanwhile, Suarez is 5-2 with a 2.97 ERA in nine games (three starts) on the road in 2021. He’s 3-4 with a 4.99 ERA in eight-night game appearances (four starts).

Sho(hei) the Money

Even though Mike Trout will make the trip to the Bronx with LA for this one, the three-time MVP won’t be in the Angels lineup Monday. But AL MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani should be. The 27-year-old collected a pair of hits Sunday and had quite the Big Apple debut back in late June before Mother Nature postponed the series finale.

Ohtani was a combined 3-for-11 against Yankee pitching a month-and-a-half ago, with all three hits coming via the long ball. He did not face Cole in the first three games of the series.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Angels Batters Batting Average vs Gerrit Cole Yankees Batters Batting Average vs José Suarez
Shohei Ohtani .273
DJ LeMahieu
.333
David Fletcher .077 Brett Gardner .000
Phil Gosselin .000 Aaron Judge .000
Justin Upton .364 Joey Gallo .000
Kurt Suzuki .000 Giancarlo Stanton .500

Ohtani hasn’t hit a homer against Cole, but the Angels two-way star is 3-for-11 against him with a double. The Halos player to watch might be Justin Upton. He’s 8-for-22 with a double and home run off the Yankee stud.

It’s a limited sample size for Yankees hitters against Suarez, but Giancarlo Stanton has taken him deep.

Angels vs Yankees Pick

While it’s tempting to load up on Cole here — especially considering his record in night games this season and career numbers against the Angels — that’s a huge number for a guy who simply wasn’t good in his previous two starts prior to missing nearly two weeks. Plus, Ohtani loves the spotlight — and there’s no bigger spotlight than Yankee Stadium.

Taking the underdog Angels in this spot just feels like the better bet.

The Pick: Angels +210
