It’s been a season to forget for the Oakland Athletics (25-63, 13-31 away), but they’ll get a chance for just their second series sweep of the year Thursday when they wrap up their 3-game set with the Detroit Tigers (37-48, 18-23 home).

After a close 1-0 win in the opener, the A’s laid the wood to the hometown Tigers, whipping them 12-3 and setting up the brooms.

However, oddsmakers are wary of the worst team in baseball picking up their third straight win and fifth in their last six.

It’s an afternoon affair on Thursday (July 6) at 1:10pm ET from Comerica Park in Detroit, MI. You can watch the game live on ESPN+.

Athletics vs Tigers Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Oakland Athletics +138 +1.5 (-156) Ov 8.5 (-110)
Detroit Tigers -164 -1.5 (+130) Un 8.5 (-110)

The MLB odds have the hometown Tigers as -164 favorites on the moneyline, an implied win probability of 62.12%.

At 18-23, Detroit has the third-worst home record in the American League. Oakland, meanwhile, entered this series with the worst road record in the bigs, but with two straight away wins, they’re now a game ahead of hapless KC Royals.

Probable Pitchers

After picking up his first two wins of the season in back-to-back starts, rookie Hogan Harris has hit the skids, getting shelled in three straight outings, getting tagged for two losses, with Oakland losing all three.

Last time out, the lefty lasted just 5.1 innings against the New York Yankees, giving up nine hits, four earned runs and a pair of long balls in a 10-4 drubbing. Harris walked two and struck out two.

Prior to that, he had his shortest outing of his young career, going 4.2 innings, giving up five hits, four earned runs and another dinger in a game Oakland lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3.

This will be Harris’ first career start vs Detroit.

Harris vs Lorenzen Stats

Hogan Harris
VS
Michael Lorenzen
2-2 Record 2-6
5.17 ERA 4.28
1.25 WHIP 1.17
.313 OBA .298
1.93 SO/W Ratio 3.10

If there’s someone happy to turn the calendar to July, it’s Michael Lorenzen. The Tigers lost all six of his starts in June, and the veteran righty was tagged for losses in four of them.

His last outing was an 8-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies, where he lasted just five innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs, walking one and striking out four.

Only one A’s player has double-digit at-bats against Lorenzen. Tony Kemp is hitting just .200 against Lorenzen in 10 trips, with no home runs and no RBIs.

Oakland and Detroit Players to Look Out For

These are the two worst hitting teams in baseball, with the Athletics in last at .221, followed by Detroit at .229.

Oakland, however, found a power surge in the win Wednesday night. Ryan Noda went deep with a 2-run shot as the A’s picked up three runs in the first and never looked back.

Jordan Diaz also homered, part of a 3-for-5 afternoon, driving in two runs and scoring three times. Shea Langeliers was the third Oakland batter to go yard.

Detroit had gone the first 17 innings in this series without a run, until Miguel Cabrera’s double in the eighth. The Tigers are second-last in doubles hit in MLB, ahead of just the Mets with 116. They have scored the third fewest runs in the bigs.

Spencer Torkelson leads Detroit with 12 home runs and is tied with Javy Baez for the team lead with 42 RBI.

Athletics vs Tigers Prediction

Oakland has dominated this matchup of late, winning eight of the last 10 against the Tigers. Including these first two meetings in 2023, they’re now a staggering 23-4 in their last 27 in Detroit.

While they have been playing better baseball of late, Oakland has just one sweep all season, taking three from the Brewers in Milwaukee from June 9-11.

The Tigers have been a decent bounce-back team recently, going 7-2 following a loss. However, they’ve struggled against left-handed pitching of late, going 0-6 against southpaws in their last six matchups.

Let’s play the percentages, and take the A’s with those plus odds.

Pick: Athletics ML (+138)
