For the first time this season, the Minnesota Twins (17-12, 7-6 away) and Chicago White Sox (8-21, 4-9 home) will collide when they reconvene on the south side. Minnesota took 10 of 19 meetings from the Pale Hose last year.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Twins vs White Sox Odds & Total

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Twins -165 -1.5 (EV) Ov 9 (-110)
White Sox +140 +1.5 (-120) Un 9 (-110)

No surprise to see the Twins favored by a decisive margin. They’re trotting out a starter who looks like he’s headed to his first career Midsummer Classic. Plus, the White Sox have been sputtering as of late.

Joe-lan Ryan

The legend of Joe Ryan is growing. And to think it took him years for an opportunity.

Tampa Bay never granted the 26-year-old any chances at the big-league level — for whatever reason. With Minnesota, Ryan finally received the call in Sept. 2021 and he’s most certainly left a huge mark since.

Now it appears Ryan is growing into the All-Star-caliber form he showed flashes of upon debuting only less than two full calendar years ago. Ryan is tied for the MLB lead in wins with five already, and his 0.81 WHIP is fifth-lowest among starters.

Furthermore, the Twins right-hander is one of 20 starting pitchers in baseball to be notching double-digit strikeouts per nine innings (10.1). This is simply a continuation of what he did in the minors.

Ryan is better than ever with a new split-finger pitch he added to his arsenal this past winter. He’s throwing harder, too.

Interestingly, Ryan has only faced the rival White Sox once out of his 37 career starts. Unfamiliarity with his type of stuff can be a boon in terms of Ryan’s outlook here.

Kopech Not a Wreck

Meanwhile, the counterpart has been having a completely different season in the early going. Despite being one of baseball’s most intriguing sub-30-year-old pitchers, Kopech has struggled out of the gate to the tune of a dreadful 7.01 ERA.

He’s far better than his current stat line, though. Kopech is still stringing together the punch-outs (9.5 K/9) and he’s actually crafting a higher average fastball velocity (96.2 mph) compared to a season ago.

The main bugaboo with the former first-round pick thus far has been issues with the long ball. Despite etching a lower flyball percentage at the moment than the previous three years collectively, Kopech is yielding a whopping 2.81 HR/9. That is a nugget we know will shrink considerably.

Fortunately, tonight Kopech draws an adversary he’s had some success against since first arriving in the Majors. The seven active Twins hitters with at least four at-bats against Kopech — Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Jose Miranda, Jorge Polanco, Nick Gordon and Michael A. Taylor — are a combined 7-for-45 (.156) opposing Kopech with 14 Ks.

That nice round number of 9 provides Kopech some leeway, especially if Ryan is continues etching his wonderful work for the road side. Count on such.
