The red-hot Toronto Blue Jays will try to stay in the thick of the American League Wild Card race against the Baltimore Orioles at 4:35 pm ET Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Manager Charlie Montoyo’s club enters the series against the O’s Friday on the heels of doing something to the Yankees no team had done to New York since 1908. It’s the first time a team never trailed while sweeping the Pinstripes over four games in the Bronx in 113 years. That’s pretty heady stuff. Plus, the Jays capped their first four-game sweep over the venerable franchise on the road since 2003 and pulled within a half-game of New York for the final AL wild card. With Hyun Jin Ryu on the bump Saturday, Toronto is a heavy favorite.

Since snapping a 19-game losing streak in late August (that included dropping two of three to Toronto), Baltimore has gone 7-8 entering Friday’s series.

Probable Pitchers

On the mound, Toronto’s Hyun Jin Ryu (13-8, 3.77) faces Keegan Akin (2-8, 7.00).

Less than half (13) of Ryu’s 27 starts this season have been of the quality vintage. But Toronto has gone 17-10 in games the 34-year-old has started in 2021. The lefty has allowed three runs or fewer in 19 outings and his ERA has not gone above 3.88 all season. Ryu has been especially dazzling against the Orioles in his career, sporting a 4-1 record and 3.19 ERA in seven turns against the franchise. In four lifetime starts at Camden Yards, Ryu is undefeated, going 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA.

Ryu vs Akin Key Stats

Hyun Jin Ryu
VS
Keegan Akin
13-8 Record 2-8
3.77 ERA 7.00
4.25 xERA 5.38
1.15 WHIP 1.63
3.85 SO/W 2.15

The veteran is coming off a spectacular outing Monday against the Yankees, shutting out New York over six innings, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out six in an 8-0 victory.

Ryu is 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA in 14 road starts this season. In 13 day game starts, he has a 6-3 record and 4/09 ERA.

The Orioles have not fared nearly as well with their starter. Manager Brandon Hyde’s club owns a putrid 4-17 record in games Akin has appeared in, going 4-10 in his starts. The 26-year-old has only tossed one quality start (among 14) this season. That seven-inning, three-hit performance where he allowed an earned run and two walks while striking out six came in a 13-1 win over the Angels on August 26th. Baltimore has actually won his last three outings, including an 8-7 victory Sunday against the reeling Yankees where he went four innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs and two walks while striking out five.

Meanwhile, Akin is 1-3 with a 6.23 ERA in eight games (five starts) at home in 2021. He’s 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in nine day games (five starts).

Charmed, I’m Sure

The Blue Jays have taken three of five games against the Orioles in Charm City this season and are 8-4 against their AL East rival overall in 2021. Several Toronto players have been swinging a hot bat over the last six games coming into the weekend set. The group is led by slugging second baseman Marcus Semien, who has gone 9-for-23 (.391) with four home runs and nine RBI with an OPS of 1.474 during the stretch.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette, Lourdes Gurriel and Teoscar Hernandez are all hitting above .300 over that same timeframe, combining to launch seven dingers and 19 RBI. They also have hit Akin fairly well over the course of their respective careers.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Blue Jays Batters Batting Average vs Keegan Akin Orioles Batters Batting Average vs Hyun Jin Ryu
Bo Bichette .500 Cedric Mullins .188
Marcus Semien .167 Ryan Mountcastle .231
Vladimir Guerrero Jr .250 Anthony Santander .231
Teoscar Hernandez .333 Trey Mancini .125
Lourdes Gurriel .429 Pedro Severino .182
Randal Grichuk .250 Jorge Mateo .000

A pair of Baltimore batters — Austin Hays and Cedric Mullins — have been particularly warm over the last week. The duo have combined to go 14-for-45 with five big flies and 12 runs driven in. Unfortunately for O’s fans, no probable Baltimore hitter Saturday owns a career batting average over .231 against Ryu.

Blue Jays vs Orioles Pick

The O’s have played well in Akin’s last three starts. But that would be the only reason to fade the favorites in this spot.

It’s hard to bet against Toronto right now. Plus, when you factor in Ryu’s career mark against Baltimore — and the fact that Jays hitters are seeing the ball very well right now — the road team is the pick.

The Pick: Blue Jays -225
