Probable Pitchers

Morton has been an absolute workhorse for the Braves this season, logging a team-high 151 innings while going 12-5 with a 3.52 ERA. He’s been very reliable and is coming off a fine outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going six innings while allowing just one run to a very dangerous offense. In the process, the righty also struck out eight. For the month of August, Morton was fantastic, posting a 2.83 ERA in six starts. He also allowed only seven walks in 35 innings.

The veteran continues to dominate hitters with his mid 90s fastball and knee-buckling breaking ball, racking up 181 K’s on the year. Morton hasn’t pitched against the Rockies in 2021, but he’s faced them 10 times throughout his lengthy big league career. He’s gone 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA. It is important to note though, Morton has shown a lot better on the road, compiling a 2.94 ERA.

*Feltner’s stats are from the minors this season, where he’s split time between High-A and Double-A*

It will be an unforgettable night for Feltner on Sunday as he takes a big-league mound for the very first time. The 25-year-old is replacing Austin Gomber, who was scheduled to start. The lefty is expected to miss the rest of the season with a back injury. Feltner started the year in High-A Spokane but quickly proved enough to move up to Double-A. He’s been phenomenal for the Hartford Yard Goats,  going 5-2 with a 2.85 ERA in 13 starts. The former Ohio State standout has also struck out 80 hitters in 72.2 innings of work.

Feltner relies on a mid-90’s fastball that can reach as high as 97. He also possesses an above-average slider and a decent changeup. He’s shown the ability to rack up the K’s at the minor league level, but of course, the Majors are a whole different story. The Braves are definitely a tough lineup for him to face as well, but there should be some comfort in knowing that he is making his first appearance at Coors Field.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Charlie Morton .250
C.J. Cron .182
Garrett Hampson .000

The Braves have been sliding at the worst possible time as the playoff race heats up. They’re 3-7 in their last 10 contests and now only have a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta was swept by the Dodgers earlier this week, but it’s not like they were blowouts. Every game was decided by one or two runs. All of their losses lately have been extremely close. It’s just a matter of getting some timely hitting and/or more consistent pitching at certain moments.

Colorado is far out of contention, but the team does play much better at home. They’re 21 games above .500 at Coors in 2021. The Rockies are also 9-9 against National League East opponents. Offensively, Colorado has been solid, ranking in the top-10 in runs, hits, and average. C.J. Cron is enjoying a breakout year, batting .276 with 26 homers after going deep in Saturday’s game. He’s currently just four bombs off his career-high of 30 from his 2018 campaign with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Braves vs Rockies Prediction

It’s always tough to bet on a game where one of the pitchers is making his major league debut. But, Morton has been extremely consistent all season long and typically thrives when pitching away from Atlanta. That being said, take the Braves on the moneyline in the series finale.

Pick: Atlanta Braves moneyline (-195)
