Detroit needed extras in the opener, eventually taking a 6-5 decision to put an end to an ugly 9-game losing skid.

Game 1 of the set goes Wednesday (June 14) at 1:10pm ET from Comerica Park in Detroit, MI. You can watch the game live on MLB Network.

Temperatures are expected to hit 70 degrees at first pitch, and should be sunny with cloudy periods.

Probable Pitchers

It will be just the third career appearance and second start for rookie AJ Smith-Shawver. The 20-year-old righty is coming off a no-decision in Atlanta’s eventual 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Smith-Shawver went 5.1 innings, giving up just three hits and a pair of unearned runs, walking two and striking out a pair.

In his big-league debut, he came on in relief in an 8-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Smith-Shawver threw 2.1 innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

He’s yet to surrender an earned run in his young career.

Michael Lorenzen gets the call for the Tigers, looking for his first win in five starts. Lorenzen took the loss last time out in an 11-6 loss to the D-backs.

He was tagged for seven hits and six earned runs across 6.1 innings, including surrendering his seventh home run on the season. Lorenzen walked one and struck out three.

Prior to that start, he was solid in a no-decision that ended with a 2-1 White Sox win in 10 innings. Lorenzen threw a 2-hitter across seven complete, giving up just one earned run, with no walks and fanning six.

He is 1-1 in six career appearances against the Tigers with one start, pitching 10.2 innings with a 3.38 ERA.

Tigers Take it in Extras

Spencer Torkelson played a huge role in helping Detroit bust their slump. He went 3-for-6 Monday, including his seventh homer on the season, before walking it off with a single in the 10th, plating Andy Ibanez.

Ibanez also went deep for the Tigers, who, despite dropping six runs, are still the lowest scoring team in the majors, putting up just 3.6 runs per game.

As a team, the Tigers are hitting .225 (29th), and own a league-worst .652 OPS.

After ripping off seven straight wins, the Braves have slightly cooled, dropping two straight. Michael Harris II went 3-for-4 in the loss to the Tigers, with his fifth home run and two runs scored. Ronald Acuna Jr had just one hit but drove in three runs.

Orlando Arcia has had the most career success against Lorenzen, hitting .357 in 14 at-bats, with two dingers and seven RBI. It’s a different story for DH Marcell Ozuna, who is hitting .105 with an RBI in 19 plate appearances.

Braves vs Tigers Game 1 Prediction

It continues to be a struggle in Motown for the Braves, who are 0-6 in their last six games against the Tigers.

However, the odds seem to be in their favor to break that streak, as Atlanta has gone 9-2 in their last 11 against the American League Central.

Detroit’s win Monday gave them their first win in their last nine interleague games. They’re also a dreadful 1-9 in their last 10 against right-handed staters.

The youngster Smith-Sawver doesn’t need to be perfect: the Braves are top-5 in runs scored, and are hitting .263 as a team, the 4th-best mark in baseball.

Look for the Braves to find their way back into the win column in the opener of this doubleheader.

Pick: Braves ML (-179)
