  • The Milwaukee Brewers are road favorites over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon
  • The Brewers send Brandon Woodruff (9-8, 2.48) to the mound to face Matt Manning (3-6, 6.14)
  • The odds and pitching matchups can be found below with a prediction

The surging Milwaukee Brewers — winners of five straight and 8 of 11 games in September entering Tuesday’s action — face off against the Detroit Tigers at 1:10 pm ET in the second game of a short two-game set at Comerica Park.

Manager Craig Counsell’s club comes into Motown fresh off a dominant three-game road sweep of Cleveland that included a combined no-hitter by Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader on Saturday. All the Brew Crew did was outscore the second-place squad in the American League Central by a total of 24-4! It’s no surprise Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers find themselves as favorites on Hump Day against rookie Matt Manning and the Motor City Kitties.

Probable Pitchers

On the mound, it’ll be Woodruff (9-8, 2.48) facing Manning (3-6, 3.6.14).

Milwaukee’s co-ace had his scheduled start Sunday pushed back a few days due to a stomach bug. Eric Lauer pitched just fine in his absence, going 5.1 IP in an 11-1 demolition of Cleveland. Speaking of demolition, perhaps Woodruff’s upset tummy was spurred by his last start on Labor Day — when he allowed three home runs to the Phillies in the first four innings of an eventual 12-0 whitewashing. By comparison, the 28-year-old allowed only big flies in April and May combined (11 starts).

Barring last week’s outing, Woodruff has be one of the more reliable starters in the National League, turning in 18 quality starts over his 27 turns in the rotation. That includes ten straight quality starts in the first two months of the season — when he sported a 1.27 ERA at the end of May.

Woodruff vs Manning Key Stats

Brandon Woodruff
VS
Matt Manning
9-8 Record 3-6
2.48 ERA 6.14
3.29 xERA 5.58
0.97 WHIP 1.59
4.66 SO/W 1.86

Milwaukee is 16-11 in Woodruff’s starts this season. Prior to being tagged with a loss to Philadelphia on the holiday, the big right-hander posted two straight quality outings. Woodruff beat the Reds and Giants, going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA over 12 innings while striking out 18.

Woodruff is 5-6 with a 2.58 ERA in 14 road starts this season. In ten day game starts, he has a 3-2 record and 1.87 ERA.

As for Manning, the 23-year-old rookie has turned in three quality starts among his 14 rotation turns in 2021. Detroit has gone 6-8 in his outings. The team’s 2016 first-round pick only went three innings (tossing 52 pitches) against the Pirates last Wednesday, allowing four hits and an earned run with no walks while striking out four in an eventual 5-1 Tigers victory.

With making Wednesday’s start, he appears to be just fine.

Manning is 2-2 with a 4.72 ERA in seven starts at home in 2021. He’s 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA in five day game starts.

Offense Brewing

While Milwaukee’s pitching of late has been absolutely filthy, the Brewers’ bats have also been hot. The club enters Tuesday’s two-game set hitting .270 for the month of September, with 15 home runs and 55 RBI and an OPS of .782. Lorenzo Cain has been the standout, going 9-for-26 (.346) with a pair of dingers and driving in eight runs since the start of the last month of the regular season prior to Tuesday’s game.

Cain isn’t the only Brewer swinging a hot bat recently, though. Eduardo Escobar has gone 11-for-34 (.324) with three homers and eight runs driven run and a 1.057 OPS in September ahead of Tuesday, tying him with Avisail Garcia for the club lead in long balls over the stretch. No probable Brewers batter Wednesday has faced Manning, but Milwaukee comes in

Detroit Tigers vs Brandon Woodruff

Tigers Batters Batting Average vs Woodruff
Jeimer Candelario .000
Harold Castro .000
Niko Goodrum .000

Only a trio — not including Miguel Cabrera — of probable Detroit batters Wednesday have ever faced Woodruff. That group of players is hitless (0-for-3) against the two-time All-Star. So, this is essentially the first time each team has seen each starter.

Detroit’s future Hall of Famer has been on another planet in September, going 14-for-31 (.452) in nine games prior to Tuesday, including a homer and 11 RBI. He’s one of four Tiger regulars — including Candelario, Castro and Victor Reyes — to be hitting above .300 this month

Brewers vs Tigers Pick

Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch a postseason berth is five entering Tuesday’s play. Counsell’s team also owns the biggest division lead — 14.0 games — in all of baseball coming into Motown. Translation: this team is highly motivated to take care of business and perhaps get a little reprieve prior to the playoffs starting.

Yes, it’s a large number. But I’m all over Woodruff to bounce back and knock off Detroit considering his overall body of work this season and record in day games this season.

The Pick: Brewers -240
