The Cleveland Indians (71-74, 35-38 away) take a trip out East to face the New York Yankees (83-65, 42-31 home) on Saturday afternoon. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM EST at Yankee Stadium. NY has won six of the last seven against Cleveland after a dominant 8-0 victory in the series opener on Friday night.
Aaron Civale gets the ball for the visitors, while the Yanks counter with right-hander Luis Gil, who made his major league debut earlier this season.

Probable Pitchers
Civale makes his 18th start of the year on Saturday in the Bronx. The 26-year-old currently has a 10-4 record and 3.76 ERA, making him one of the more efficient arms in the Indians rotation. In 105.1 innings, he’s surrendered just 26 walks while striking out 85. Although Civale has been reliable this season for Cleveland, he’s been struggling as of late.

Across his last five starts, the righty has compiled a dismal 5.06 ERA. In Civale’s most recent outing, the Milwaukee Brewers absolutely lit him up, scoring seven earned runs and chased him out of the game in just three frames. Civale also allowed three home runs to the Brew Crew. But, it’s basically been two starts in the last five that were rough. The other three were solid, where he allowed only one earned run. Civale has faced the Yankees once this season and tossed five innings of two-run baseball. However, he has an ERA over six in day games.
Civale vs Gil
10-4 | Record | 1-0 |
3.76 | ERA | 2.88 |
105.1 | Innings Pitched | 25 |
85 | SO | 32 |
26 | BB | 15 |
Gil only made his MLB debut in early August, but he’s impressed since joining the Yanks. The youngster has gone 1-0 in five starts, posting a sharp 2.88 ERA. In the process, he’s racked up 32 K’s in 25 innings but has walked 15. After giving up zero runs in his first three outings at the big league level, Gil has been hit around across the last two games.

On September 13th, the Twins touched him up for five earned in six frames and also slugged three homers. On September 8th, the Dominican was his own worst enemy, walking seven batters in 3.1 innings against the Blue Jays. The Indians have never faced the 23-year-old but he does have a 4.88 ERA in afternoon contests this season. Coincidentally, all of his starts have been at Yankee Stadium as well. If he can get ahead of hitters on a consistent basis, Gil is extremely tough to hit.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Yankees Hitters | Batting Average vs Civale |
---|---|
Brett Gardner | .200 |
Kyle Higashioka | .500 |
Aaron Judge | .400 |
DJ LaMehieu | .200 |
Rougned Odor | .000 |
Anthony Rizzo | .200 |
Gary Sanchez | .500 |
Gleyber Torres | .333 |
Gio Urshela | .667 |
It hasn’t been a great season for Cleveland, who are far out of playoff contention. They’re just 3-7 in their last 10 games but did take two out three against the Minnesota Twins earlier this week. The biggest problem for the Indians has been their inconsistencies offensively. Cleveland is hitting just .236 as a team and score a mere 4.4 runs per game, which is 18th in the Majors. To make matters worse for this Yankees series, the team is 11-20 against AL East opponents in 2021.

It’s crunch time for the Yanks, who are in the thick of the Wild Card race alongside the Red Sox and Jays, with the A’s and Mariners not far back either. After a brutal seven-game losing streak, the Bronx Bombers have been playing better baseball as of late, winning four of their last five.

This current series is absolutely massive for them, especially if they can pull off the sweep. Next, the Yankees travel out to Texas before meetings with the Red Sox, Jays, and Rays to finish up the season. Needless to say, New York is going to have their work cut out for them in order to lock down a berth in the AL Wild Card game.
Cleveland vs Yankees Prediction
New York has been the more dominant team in this matchup and I think you’ll see Gil bounce back with a quality outing here. Civale is usually pretty solid as well, which means it will come down to the wire and be a close one. That said, the most value will be in the Yankees’ moneyline.
Pick: New York Yankees moneyline (-190)
