Los Angeles vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

After two straight losses followed by a pair of no-decisions, Clayton Kershaw got back into the win column last time out, when the Dodgers hammered the New York Yankees 8-4.

Kershaw went seven strong, giving up just two four hits and two earned runs, while striking out nine and walking one. It’s the fourth time Kershaw has fanned nine, though he’s yet to hit double-digit punchouts in 2023.

It’s just the second time in six starts the lefty has been able to go deeper than five innings.

One other notable stat: Kershaw surrendered two solo home runs to the Yankees in the win, allowing his ninth and 10th homers on the season, after just 12 starts and less than 70 innings.

That’s already matched his total from 2022, when he started 23 times and pitched 126.1 innings.

It’s been a rough go of late for Reds’ righty Graham Ashcraft.

He was lit on fire in a 10-8 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in his last start. He lasted just four innings, surrendering 10 earned runs on nine hits, including two dingers (including a grand slam), while walking four and striking out just two.

Prior to that, he got the win as the Reds dusted the Cubs 8-5. Ashcraft pitched five innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits, while walking three with six k’s.

That’s been the only bright spot, as Ashcraft has lost three of his four starts. He was on the wrong end of an 8-5 loss to St Louis, and an 11-6 loss to the Rockies. In both starts, he surrendered 10 hits and seven earned runs.

Los Angeles is in a battle at the top of the NL West, running neck-and-neck with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Reds, meanwhile, are looking up at the Pirates and Brewers in the Central.

Ashcraft is going to have quite a time facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career. Los Angeles boasts three hitters inside the top 10 in OPS — Freddie Freeman (4th), JD Martinez (6th) and Mookie Betts (T-9th).

Los Angeles is third in runs scored, and they’re tied with the Tampa Bay Rays with 106 home runs on the season, tops in the bigs.

Cincy is no slouch on offense, ranking just outside the top 10 in runs scored at 4.64 per game (12th), though they are tied for the 5th-fewest home runs on the season (52).

Kershaw faced the Reds once last year, winning 10-5. He went six innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run, striking out seven and walking one.

For his career, Kershaw is 6-2 with an ERA of 2.25, with 107 strikeouts in 14 appearances against the Reds in his career.
