  • The New York Mets are -115 home favorites over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, August 24
  • San Francisco is 2-4 in its last six games played at Citi Field
  • The Mets lost two of three at San Francisco from August 16-18

The New York Mets (61-63, 36-23 home) are getting up close and personal with the contenders for the National League West Division title. They’re in the midst of a 13-game stretch during which they’re only playing the San Francisco Giants (80-44, 30-25 away) and Los Angeles Dodgers.

A three-game homestand beginning Tuesday against the NL West-leading Giants will conclude the running of this gauntlet against arguably the two best teams in the NL. New York dropped two of three last week at San Francisco.

Those results were sandwiched in between a pair of series against LA in which the Mets went 1-6. The reigning World Series champion Dodgers trail the Giants by 2.5 games for the NL West lead.

Surprisingly perhaps, New York is a slight -115 home favorite over the visiting Giants (-105) in Tuesday’s series opener. The Mets are 3-4 through their last seven home games.

Long vs Megill

Tylor Megill
1-1 Record 1-2
5.72 ERA 3.21
3.86 xERA 2.87
1.27 WHIP 1.16
3.10 SO/W Ratio 4.00

Entering August, Mets right-hander Megill sat with an impressive ERA of 2.04. He has hit a wall this month, however. He’s 0-2 in four August starts with an ERA of 5.35.

In his most recent start on August 18 at San Francisco, Megill looked more like his old self. He allowed one earned run in six innings and struck out six with a 1.16 WHIP. Though he didn’t figure in the decision, the Mets were 6-2 winners. It’s the first game they’ve won this month with Megill on the mound.

Megill is 1-0 at home this season. The Mets are 5-1 in his six starts at Citi Field. He rates among the top 9% in MLB in xERA (2.87), xwOBACON (.315) and xwOBA (.261). Megill is among the top 10% in xBA (.194).

The Giants are winless in four of rookie left-hander Long’s last five appearances. He took the loss just once in that span, a start against Oakland in which he surrendered four earned in five innings of a 6-2 setback.

Long returned to the rotation August 14. He worked as an opener in a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Long allowed two hits and an earned run over two innings while striking out four.

This will be the first time he faces the Mets in his big-league career.

Giants vs Mets Pick

Two-time all-star Javier Baez returned to the Mets’ lineup Sunday following an 11-game absence due to back spasms. He smacked two hits and scored two runs as they beat the Dodgers 7-2. Francisco Lindor is also expected back for this series, giving the Mets their all-star middle infield. Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is on a nine-game hitting streak. He’s 7-for-19 with two homers.

New York was four games in front in the NL East on Aug. 1. A 5-16 August has seen the Mets skid all the way to third place in the division, seven games back of the leading Atlanta Braves.

San Francisco has won 11 of the past 14 games. The Giants are 4-1 in the past five road games. They were the first MLB club to hit the 50, 60, 70 and 80-win plateau this season.

Pick: San Francisco Giants (-105).
