  • The Giants are sending Logan Webb and his 10-3 record to the mound on Thursday
  • The Padres counter with Yu Darvish (8-10) in a game they badly need to win
  • Read on for a preview, full odds and a best bet for Thursday’s afternoon NL West matchup

The San Francisco Giants (98-53, 49-27 away before Wednesday’s game) visit the San Diego Padres (76-74, 44-32 home) for the final meeting of a three-game set on Thursday, September 23rd. While the Giants have already qualified for the postseason, and are continuing to hold off the Dodgers for the division lead, the Padres are watching their wild-card hopes slip away with the team 5.5 games back before their game Wednesday.

The Giants have to be confident with right-hander Logan Webb (10-3, 2.86 ERA) taking the mound for the 4:10 pm ET start. The Padres are responding with Yu Darvish, who will attempt to improve on his 8-10 record, as well as try to lower his 4.13 ERA.

Probable Pitchers

In the midst of his best season as a major-league player, the 24-year-old Webb has emerged as one of the best pitchers on the Giants staff. The right-hander has pitched well against the Padres in the past, but has yet to earn his first win against them.

In three starts and 16 innings, Webb is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA, and has shown remarkable ability to keep the ball in the park, giving up just one home run against them. However, he is slightly less comfortable playing against San Diego at Petco Park, where he has made two starts but has seen his ERA go up to 3.60.

Still, even in limited game time against the Giants, some of the San Francisco players have enjoyed considerable success against Webb. Wil Myers, Jake Cronenworth, Adam Frazier, Eric Hosmer and Jurickson Profar are all batting .500 or better against him, while Manny Machado is at .286.

With just one win since June 21, Yu Darvish will be hoping to turn things around here. The Japanese right-hander has lost eight games over that stretch, seeing his record fall from 7-2 to 8-10.

But he has the comfort of knowing he has a winning 2-1 career record against the Giants over six starts, even if his ERA hasn’t been all that impressive against them, standing at 5.19.

Plus he has the comfort of knowing that he is pitching in the friendly confines of Petco Park, where he has gone 8-5 with a 3.27 ERA in 19 starts and 113 innings.

Friar Flop

With a postseason place tantalizingly within reach, the Friars have chosen the wrong time of the season to lose four straight and nine of 11 entering Wednesday night’s game. The recent streak of losses has been particularly demoralizing, with the team getting outscored 25-16 over that stretch.

And there rarely are any easy wins over the Giants for San Diego, with the Padres trailing 6-8 in the season series entering Wednesday’s games, and with an all-time home record of 225-223 against them.

Giants vs Padres Prediction

Given the way the season has turned for both San Diego and Darvish, while Logan Webb has seemingly just gone from strength to strength, this game is firmly in San Francisco’s wheelhouse.

Pick: Giants -1.5 (+160)
