The Baltimore Orioles visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday for the finale of a three-game interleague set at Busch Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:15 PM ET.

Baltimore is yet to announce their starter here. The Cards meanwhile, will hand hard-throwing righty Jordan Hicks the ball.

Orioles vs Cardinals Probable Pitchers

The Orioles’ starting pitcher is TBA, but there are a couple of potential options. Lefty Keegan Akin hasn’t started a game yet this season, but he typically goes two or three innings in relief. Akin owns a 1.96 ERA in 18.1 innings and has an impressive 0.95 WHIP. Since Baltimore used most of their main rotational arms in the last few days, it’s possible they go with an opener like Akin, followed by the likes of Dillon Tate, Joey Krehbiel, and others. Only time will tell.

Akin vs Hicks

After several years in a closing role, the Cardinals have converted Hicks to a starter role and so far, it’s working out. While he hasn’t pitched more than 4.1 innings in a single outing, the 25-year-old is 1-2 with a 3.78 ERA in 16.2 innings of work. The 18 strikeouts are positive, but Hicks’ command is shaky at times, allowing 10 free passes.

Last time out, Hicks gave up two runs in 4.1 frames against the Giants. He also racked up five K’s. Hicks has never faced the Orioles though in his big league career.

Orioles Betting Outlook

Prior to Wednesday’s loss, Baltimore won three in a row and went 7-3 in their previous 10 games. As a whole, the O’s are honestly playing respectable baseball. They’re 15th in average and 14th in OBP, with Austin Hays leading the way offensively with a .312 average.

On the mound, despite losing John Means to Tommy John Surgery, Baltimore’s rotation is performing a lot better than expected. Bruce Zimmerman owns a 2.67 ERA and essentially all of the starters are hovering around the four mark in ERA. They definitely need more depth though, with a reliever likely to get the call here.

Cardinals Betting Outlook

St. Louis ended their three-game losing streak on Wednesday with a dominant win and now sits at 17-13 in the NL Central. The bats are thriving, ranking 10th in average and runs scored. Nolan Arenado is absolutely raking, batting .318 with seven bombs already. He’s moved up to +600 in NL MVP odds amid his hot start.

Paul De Jong’s struggles resulted in him getting sent down to Triple-A, but Tommy Edman has filled in nicely at shortstop, providing reliable offense and solid defense. The rotation meanwhile possesses a ton of experience and they’re all keeping their team in games. Steven Matz is about the only wild card right now, compiling an ERA over seven.

Baltimore vs St. Louis Prediction

Hicks has an ERA north of four at home this season, but with the uncertainty of who will take the hill for the Orioles, I have to take the Cardinals here. It will almost certainly be a reliever and St. Louis just broke out of their offensive rut on Wednesday. The bats will keep rolling.
