After opening the series by becoming the first MLB team to clinch a playoff berth this season, the San Francisco Giants close out a four-game set with San Diego Padres at 3:45 pm ET, Thursday, at Oracle Park.

The Giants are trying to fend off the Los Angeles Dodgers for their first National League West title since 2014. The Padres are in a five-team race for the second NL Wild Card.

Probable Pitchers

The Padres are expected to use left-hander Ross Detwiler (2-1, 4.86) to start a bullpen game. Kevin Gausman (14-5, 2.65) will start for the Giants.

Detwiler made his Padres’ debut Tuesday with one scoreless inning of relief. It was an eventful inning as he walked three and struck out two without allowing a hit.

Detwiler vs Gausman

Ross Detwiler

2-1 Record 14-5
4.86 ERA 2.65
3.78 xERA 3.66
1.27 WHIP 1.01
3.22 SO/W 4.19

Detwiler was signed as a free agent after being released by the Miami Marlins earlier in the month. The 13-year veteran was 2-1 with a 4.96 ERA for the Marlins in 46 games (five starts).

Each of Detwiler’s five starts were as an opener and none lasted more than 2.2 innings.

But Detwiler did get his first hit in eight years.

Detwiler has a 1-0 record in day games this season with a 3.86 ERA in 11 outings, including one start. He has pitched 2.2 scoreless innings at Oracle Park covering three games.

Overall, Detwiler has worked 4.1 shutout innings against the Giants in five games in 2021. In his career versus San Francisco, he is 0-1, 6.05 ERA in 11 games (three starts) and 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four games (one start) at Oracle Park.

Gausman hasn’t lost since July 30 and is 5-0 with a 3.50 ERA in his last eight starts. He beat the Cubs last Saturday in Chicago when he gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Gausman had made three quality starts in his last four times on the hill and 18 overall this season in 29 outings. The Giants are 19-10 when he starts.

In 12 starts at home this season, Gausman is 6-3 with a 3.39 ERA. He is 8-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 13 starts during the day.

Gausman has faced the Padres three this year, going 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA and is 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA in five career games (three starts).

Cronenworth, Yaz Likely to Sit

Padres shortstop Jake Cronenworth has missed six straight games with a broken left ring finger and probably won’t return until Friday when the Padres open a pivotal series against the Cardinals at St. Louis.

Giants center fielder Mike Yastrzemski sat out Wednesday night’s game with a bruised elbow sustained in Tuesday’s win over the Padres. It’s unlikely he will play Thursday in a day game following a night game.

Slumping Padres outfielder Tommy Pham has lost playing time recently but should be the lineup as he is 4 for 9 against Gausman. Conversely, right fielder Wil Myers is 2 for 12 with six strikeouts.

Giants third baseman Evan Longoria has been a tough matchup for Detwiler, going 2 for 5 with a home run and two walks.

Padres-Giants Pick

The Giants won seven of the first 11 meetings between the teams this season, including four of five in San Francisco. There is no sense trying to buck that trend with Gausman pitching.

The Pick: Giants moneyline (-150)
