- The MLB trade deadline is July 31, 2019 at 4:00 pm EST
- Ken Giles is arguably the best relief pitcher on the 2019 market
- The Toronto Blue Jays could keep Giles through 2020 if they chose to
With the trade deadline less than a week away, things have really heated up around the league including the Boston Red Sox odds to land Ken Giles. The Boston Red Sox are now the best odds to land Ken Giles at the trade deadline with +110 odds.
The right handed pitcher is extremely effective, makes a fairly modest salary at $6.3 million, is under contract for another year after this year, and is playing for a team that is in full rebuild mode
Odds What Team Ken Giles Will Play for After the 2019 MLB Trade Deadline?
Team | Odds |
---|---|
Boston Red Sox | +110 |
Atlanta Braves | +225 |
Toronto Blue Jays | +250 |
Philadelphia Phillies | +750 |
Tampa Bay Rays | +750 |
Giles, 28, has posted a 1.59 ERA, 1.088 WHIP, 58 strikeouts and 14 saves in 34 innings of work for the Blue Jays this season. The reliever’s 58 strikeouts in 34 innings translates to a rate of 15.4 per nine innings. In addition, he has by far the lowest rate of contact of any AL reliever. He’s one of the majors’ top trade candidates going into the deadline.

Fits in Well
Both the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves look like viable homes for Giles as neither team has a dedicated closer for the most part. The Braves look for Luke Jackson, but he’s only put up 17 saves in 45 games.
And the Red Sox don’t really look for anyone with Brandon Workman having the most saves on the team with five in 47 games. The reality is, Ken Giles would fit in well with either of these two teams.

The Blue Jays Need…?
In order for a deal to go down involving Giles, the Blue Jays need to get something in return. The team is in full rebuild mode, knowing that they aren’t going to be competitive this year or next. But in order to rebuild, they need to leverage their assets. The issue with the Red Sox is their farm system lacks both elite talent and depth outside of their top prospects, which is a small list itself.

Not a Done Deal
Trading Ken Giles isn’t a done deal, with reports of the team not trading Stroman now, and possibly offering him an extension, the best bet would be to bet the Jays. He already plays for the team, and the team hasn’t exactly been transparent of his future.
Source: Blue Jays have told interested teams that they might not trade Stroman, but extend him. Unclear if this is a res possibility or a negotiating tactic
